Air Force Officer Owned: 1970 Ford Torino GT

I did a double take at first because this 1970 Ford Torino GT seemed quite familiar to me. Credit the factory “laser stripe,” which must have been a popular feature, for my deja vu: we profiled a similar car back in June. Well, this example is indeed a different car, and it has those trick hideaway headlights everyone goes nuts for. You’ll find the Torino here on eBay where bidding is just under $5K with the reserve unmet.

This big-block equipped Torino is said to have belonged to an Air Force officer from new and remained in his family’s care ever since. I feel like throughout history, military personnel have always had excellent tastes in cars, no matter which country the vehicle hailed from. The Torino is a matching-numbers example and is said to fire right up, but the seller still recommends a thorough mechanical refresh before daily driving it.

The interior features “Ginger Knit Vinyl” which the seller says is in excellent condition. It’s probably acceptable for the age but I still see a fair amount of work needed inside. The other area of concern is the rear lower quarters, which are quite rusty, and the seller also references dings and dents incurred while the car was in storage. The dash pad looks to be in good shape and areas of polished trim still look shiny.

429d

The 429 is a motor that should certainly deliver plenty of smiles when running smoothly, and is a nice match for a big cruiser like this Torino GT. About the only departure from originality are the hubcaps, and the seller indicates he may be able to track down the correct pieces. All told, this does look like a nicely presented driver with some bodywork needed, but it all depends on what the reserve is.

Nice one – pity about the rust (we can see) – be a very capable car

Best looking Ford ever! with a 429 to boot! needs a set of Magnum 500 wheels though.

Reminds me of mine, but I had the 500 package with a 351c. Factory air, Aussie heads and an intake and carb swap, a 268 cam. It was plenty for my street runs. There were meaner cars, but they didn’t look so great!

The front grill surround looks broken and will need replacement or fixing. Specific to hideaways so hard to find and expensive when you do. Would be nice car when restored.

An all original with under 20K miles, in spectacular condition went for $44K including buyer’s fees at this week’s Mecum in Oakland, CA. It’s illogical to me that these don’t bring more.

I see $15 K to make this on presentable, assuming that the 429 and tranny aren’t used up. If the reserve on this one is $10K, I can envision someone buying it just to get the motor, then swap it into a ’69 base Mach1, then parting the rest out. However if the reserve is $20K, IMO this is likely overpriced based on100K miles on the odometer, unless the drivetrain and suspension have been very well maintained.

Yeah, I saw that Mecum car too, and was amazed at the cheap price. It was a beautiful car, and I do love me some 429.

But everybody just has to have a Camaro or a Chevelle – so they can be like everybody else.

Don’t even think about parting out something like this. There arnt many left like this one that is altogether. Its even got a 429! that’s very cool. If some one wants to do a build as fore mention there are somany different ways to go. I am just a purist and hate to see a car like this look at as a parts car. Sorry, don’t mean to offend anyone, just my thoughts and I think that’s what b/f is all about.
btw I need to put some pics up of stuff I have and stuff I come across. I could show some cool things that I come across. I am always looking, just a habit and don’t have deep pockets, but always looking. Rightnow I,m chashing a 67 corvair that was on b/f a week or so ago. It was a b/f feature and turnsout it is close to me-like less then 25 miles. So we are within $300 of me buying it. I REALLY will try to do a follow-up if I get it and let you all know the outcome. That would be #4 that I got through b/f.

Probably will cost a lot money to restore if rusty + brakes will need work and suspension and on and on

Magnum 500s or the dog dishes with the deep dish trim rings you used to see on these. In my opinion, one of the best wheel treatments ever.

Ah, folks, there is not a lot left here. UP-state N.Y. has taken its toll on that chassis.

Significant muscle car (mid-sized) with those specs, not withstanding, but the condition of that unitized body that was beat on by some juvie driver too!
No need for a ice pick, your thumb will suffice on this.
Find another body for this one. That Mustang is an idea !
Too bad the Bullet Bird is gone already, dang!
Under water at a 5k buy with this here. Already over 7.5k., not me!
I already have a FE looking for a home.
Just a humble opinion from a fellow rust belter.
I try to look south or west for any bones, interiors/drives are ok from here.

You can see that the front bumper is tweaked when compared to the convertible above. Also the hood and grill aligment is off. I have never seen a 429 Laser Stripe equipped car with full wheel covers. These wheels covers look to be from a base 71 Mustang.
