All-Time Best! 401-Powered 1960 Buick Invicta

Buick called the 1960 models it’s “All-Time Best” and promised they were built for “big country, big roads, big trips, big comfort.” This 1960 Buick Invicta in Fort Ashby, West Virginia looks ready to fulfill that promise. Despite some rust, this is a running car that “drives well.” The No Reserve auction here on eBay has attracted over 20 bids and its value sits above $3800. Thanks to reader local_sheriff for spotting this sweet cruising vessel.

Buick’s Delta Fins went away after 1960 so this is the last of that era. Space-age styling continues in the booster-rocket treatment of the rear quarters and tail lights.

The 401 cid (6.6L) V8 makes bountiful torque, a Buick’s hallmark. Upgrades include an aluminum radiator and later dual-circuit brake master cylinder with vacuum boost. The seller describes rust in need of attention and other details.

Dashboards of this vintage delight the senses with a spaceship-load of visual and tactile elements and the Invicta is no exception. An assortment of chrome, stalks, buttons, levers, plus a trio of aftermarket gauges provide plenty of information and character. I’ve actually been considering a sedan of this vintage lately, considering how it might replace my 2006 BMW 750Li for comparison. Exceeding the German car’s acceleration, reliability, and highway manners would be fairly easy. Approaching its maximum cornering capabilities is neither feasible nor necessary for my purposes. I’d settle for braking and cornering on par with a typical full-size SUV. How would you treat this Buick?

Just a close-up dash shot? No overall interior views?

What a torque monster. Add it to my “dry day driver” list. If I fixed this thing up I’d be buying a lot of rear tires.

My first car was a 1961 LeSabre with that same 401 engine. It had a hydromatic transmission. Just put it in Low and floor it and the tires would just smoke. Pure heaven fora 16year old kid. Guess it did have a lot of torque.

For “only” a 401 and Dynaflow, these 60-61’s are crazy fast for the era. A real sweetheart of an engine..

Could this be Lt Tragg’s car from Perry Mason?

Saw one that looked just like it on Perry Mason this morning, running inside a closed garage with a dead guy behind the wheel.

Looks a lot like my dad’s ’60 Electra. What a car! Traded it in for a ’65 Wildcat that I learned to drive in. I’ve had several Buicks of this vintage and now without one I’ll be watching this one.

There are only a handful of cars, in my opinion, that have the flowing sleekness and sculpted beauty of a ’60 Buick. Two-door, four-door, it doesn’t matter. They are all works of fine art.

That sold cheap. If it had been a Cadillac with the same 4 doors it would have gone for much more.

I have always loved the dash design where you had to look into a mirror which means everything was printed and made backwards and upside down.

    Ingenious.
