Almost Done: 1962 Chevrolet Impala

Being a 1962 model myself, I’ve always had a soft spot for 1962 vehicles. This 1962 Chevrolet Impala two-door hardtop is on eBay with a current bid price of $6,100 and there are three days left on the auction. This Impala is located in Glen Gardner, New Jersey.

I can’t tell if this car was restored at some point or if it’s just been touched up again and again over the decades, but overall it looks pretty good. There are a lot of rust spots lurking underneath the paint but just about any and every part that may be needed to fix this car to like new again is available. They say that this car wears almost of its original paint, but something odd is going on, it looks like a spray can paint job to me, but maybe it’s just frost or something..

The seller says that this car runs and drive great and they just drove it 2.5 hours for a car show. There has been a ton of work done on this car including rebuilding the entire front end, pretty much every part there is. One thing they did was to put big-block coil springs in the front which gives it a little too much lift for me. I’m not a big gasser guy, but that’s just me. The entire brake system has been gone through and rebuilt and it sounds like this one is just ready for some body work and you’ll have a gem on your hands.

The interior looks great. You can see that this car has an automatic, and yes, it’s a two-speed Powerglide (or, “slip-and-slide” as we used to call them). It shifts great, according to the seller. The heater core isn’t connected so I’m not sure what’s going on there, maybe they weren’t planning on driving it in cold weather or maybe it was leaking. Hopefully that can be sorted out without too much trouble.

Here’s Chevy’s 4.6L, Turbo Fire 283 V8 and it’s said to run great and has a lot of work done on it and to the surrounding components, like a black-painted aluminum radiator, a new water pump, etc. Although, it looks like the old generator there, I expected to see an upgraded alternator and related electrical components. This engine used to have 170 hp but I’m not sure what it has now with rebuilt heads and an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb. What do you think of this car? 1962 is my favorite body style for Impalas, with 1965 being a close second. This car looks good if a person has the skills to do their own bodywork and it’ll need some welding and painting for sure. With the reserve not yet met at $6,100, what do you think this car will sell for? Or, what do you think it’s worth?

I’ve always liked these cars, at a local DX gas station that all the HS guys hung out at one kid had a red with white top 62 with a 409 / 4 speed, that was one cool car. This one could be a fun restomod project for not much money if the bidding doesn’t go much higher.

These were the cars of my youth. Excluding ’59 and ’61 I’ve had an Impala for every year from ’58 to 68. I’ve had several of some years too. My only ’62 was a blue/blue with a 283 powerglide. It was nice when I got it in the early seventies but, I destroyed it just like everything else I got my hands on back then.

In my area this would go for 8K~9.5K I would think.

A buddy in high school had a 63 wagon with a powerglide. On the freeway one day the car would not go over 65 mph. I looked over and told him to put it in drive if he wanted more speed.

After I swapped to a bigger cam full dual exhaust and aluminum intake with Holley and Mallory dual point my 68 Nova would go ninety in low!

Needs some white fender well headers, lettered out and patina’d like an old gasser and put some vintage torque thrusts on the front. Change it over to a 4 speed with a white shift ball and be a fun car. Oh and some vintage pie crust cheaters on the back on the stock white steelies.

Those white steelies are not correct for an Impala. Even the dog dish models had body-colored wheels. I’m guessing the seller did the top and wheels with spray paint to brighten up the car but I think they cheapen it’s appearance, like it’s a basic old van or pickup truck. Although if you went race replica like gotboost16 suggests, then the white wheels would look cool.

My dad had a 62 convertible, grey, white top, blue interior, 283 powergilde. I learned to drive on that car. When I was 14, He took me to the plant he worked at one Sunday afternoon, no one there and a huge open parking lot. Got pretty good at making left turns…..really loved that car, always thought it was great looking.

Yep. It’s an old Detroit City Bus that we used to tow the 62 to the strips.

      David,
You should know the answer to this. When did Chevy start using alternater’s? I thought it was around these yrs. Since you’ve had so many ’62’s, I figured you would know.

Sadly–although there mat be sone original paint (color) on the car–I believe it’s been re-done in the pas.. The “patch” job done in the trunk tells the tale of lazy work… Common rust areas there–I’m betting the new owner will find more surprises if they begin working on the car.. Cool car–not a survivor though.. Price is already higher than if consider paying as a “smart” buy

Saw this 62 Impala in Carlisle Pa at the fall collector car swap meet a couple weeks ago looked like a decent car to play around with. Just took a quick look at it but it seemed to be in good shape. I didn’t speak to the owner & don’t remember if there was an asking price even being shown on the car. Figuring that must be the car show they drove it too that was 2 1/2 hours away I’m assuming that’s in its description.

I bought this car for 12500 on eBay and had it shipped from New Jersey to California. The car is being fitted with an air bag suspension, disk brakes, air conditioning, and an alternator for now. I will drive it this summer then in the winter my son and I will strip the car down completely, fix all the rust spots and paint it so it will be ready in 2018. I bought this car with funds that I won in a lawsuit against an abusive police Sgt. by the name of Tyson Perry of Merced County. As such the car will be named The Thin Blue Line.
