Almost Done: 1967 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible

We’ve heard it before, a car that an owner loves and is restoring is almost done when the owner’s failing health forces them to sell the car. It’s such a sad situation, I hate hearing that. This 1967 Oldsmobile 98 convertible was almost done but is now listed here on eBay in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There is an unmet opening bid of $5,000 and a buy it now price of $6,000. Thanks to Local_Sheriff for sending in this tip!

I’d offer to check out this car in person for any serious parties but with less than a day left on the auction, it may be too late for that. The offer still stands, though. It really could use some better photos, maybe that would have made the difference. The photos are really not that good at all, but sometimes it’s not easy to get photos if a person doesn’t have a smartphone or a good camera. Every photo is cut off in some way and I’d be happy to check it out if they run the auction again.

You can see missing parts and pieces which really had me worried until the seller mentioned that they have all of the missing parts, they just need to be put back onto the car. Their father was the owner and restorer of this great looking car and it has to be tough to see their father – a well-accomplished body guy and mechanic – not being able to finish a restoration project on their beloved car. They say that this car only has 47,279 miles on it and it sure looks great other than needing to have a few hopefully-also-restored parts bolted back onto it. Once it’s done, though, look out!

This is the only interior photo which is really unfortunate. The eighth-generation Olds 98, or Ninety-Eight if you’re as formal as this car is, went through a couple of major design changes that really made the later cars, the 1969 and 1970 models, look like a totally different generation. My personal favorite is the 1970 Olds 98 because my dad had one – exactly like this – and it was such a great car that I’d love to get another one. Maybe if I could see more of this ’67 98 convertible I would fall in love with it, which is why I’m scared to go and look at it. My dad’s 1970 Olds 98 didn’t have power windows which I always thought was weird, even as a kid. It’s a luxury car but no power windows? I don’t know if this car has them, it’s impossible to tell from this one photo of the driver’s seat.

The engine looks pretty good but certainly wasn’t included in the restoration thus far. It’s Oldsmobile’s 425 cubic-inch V8 which would have had 365 hp. There isn’t any word on how it runs or even if it runs but I’m assuming that it at least runs since one of the photos shows it parked on the street and a 4,500-pound car would be tough to push around by hand. Hagerty is at $9,400 for a #4 fair condition 1967 Olds 98 convertible so this could be a great buy here. Are there any fans of these big Oldsmobile 98s out there?

This is exactly the kind of car I’m into at this point. Detroit, excessive, easy to steer, easy to enter and exit. The price seems really really good, so I expect it will be scooped up pretty quick. Hell, the paint job is worth 6K all day long. If I hadn’t just bought two land yachts recently I’d buy this car in a heartbeat. Kind regards to the family, and best of luck with the sale.

Scotty, Sadly this is a way of life. I have seen it many times. Someone retires and buys an old car to tinker with. Time has a way of getting away and often health issues take over. Because most worked and messed with cars in youth it isn’t the same. It’s more expensive now for everything including healthcare.

Many no longer have five years left to spend working on a car. My family didn’t want my vehicles and I had many. I am not sad. I sold them so they wouldn’t feel guilty after my passing and or turn my garage into a museum (dumb) I took control so no one to come in and take advantage of them. Some do not know when to say when.

I traveled with my family and do things with them that otherwise I would be spending doing car things, I still do some but in moderation. I am more busy now that I am older.

The few collector cars I have now I drive and beat on but (Japanese) are already spoken for.

This,,,was your fathers Oldsmobile, an image they just couldn’t shake, and helped contribute to it’s demise. Nice car, sad story. Get used to it, this site is filled with those stories. Ok, this seems pretty legit, but it’s how many of these flippers get the cars in the 1st place. A very nice car, fathers or not.

Not my favorite Olds however I like this roadboat! Let’s hope all parts missing in the pics are there; if not GOOD LUCK locating model specific bits as this isn’t the typical repop industry vehicle.
If the description fits I’d say this is one great opportunity for someone to obtain a massive 60s cruiser that’s even a ragtop! Who said cool vintage cars can’t be located any longer without paying an arm and a leg?

I can almost see from one end to the other of this titanic size car. Just kidding, nice ride, if only it were mine, but waiting for my 67 Skylark convertible with 4speed tranny. I just might live long enough to get one.
    God bless America

The 425 Olds engine was one of the finest engines produced.
    I’m not a fan of the 67, a 66 is really a thing of beauty…
