Almost One Owner: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The second-generation Chevrolet Camaro was nearing the end of the road by 1979, and what a great run this body style had for 11 years.  Chevy made it easy to look cool in any of these Camaro Offerings, but adding the Z28 package made you look like a rock star.  New for the Z28 in 1979 was a front spoiler and fender flares plus enhanced decals.  Chevy also set a sales record for the Camaro in 1979, cranking out over 280,000 of them, so there are still some nicely preserved examples out there to be had.  If you are in the market for a well-cared-for second-generation Camaro, this 1979 Z28 may be a good match for you.  Located in Kennesaw, Georgia, it can be found here on Craigslist with a price tag of $16,500.  Many thanks go out to Barn Finds reader Pat L for the tip on this one.

The Z28 being offered here had the same owner until just a couple of months ago when the current owner acquired it in May of this year, and it is obvious from the photos that this car has seen great care over the last 42 years.  The seller says that it has had one high-quality repaint in its lifetime in the original color, which appears to be Chevrolet Code 69, Dark Brown Metallic.  Judging from the photos, the body and paint look very good from just about every angle.  The interior is in overall well-preserved condition, although there is some cracking on the dashboard.  The trunk boasts its original jack and space-saver tire.

Under the hood, we find a 350 cubic inch V-8 paired to a 3-speed automatic transmission.  It is quite clean-looking and said to be the original running gear, although the air cleaner is an aftermarket Edelbrock model.  No word on whether or not the drivetrain has ever been refreshed and mileage is stated to be 84,000.  Other aftermarket items include chrome 5-spoke Cragar S/S style wheels and a black rear window louver.

Other than a few cosmetic details on the inside, this Camaro seems like it needs very little before it is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.  The second-generation body style has stood the test of time and has become a classic in the Camaro lineup.  Purists would of course prefer a 3-pedal model, but for an automatic example this well-preserved $16,500 seems like a very fair price to pay.  What are your thoughts on this 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28?

While these are nice cars when in this condition, it seems like yesterday that every trailer in the South had one in the front yard on blocks!

I live in the South, but am hoping for parole…These are the patron saint cars of the rednecks here.
How do you if a redneck is smart?
The wheel bolt pattern on his car is the same as the bolt pattern on his trailer…

This is another flip car. Looks well preserved but just another one of 280,000 Camaro for 1979.
Asking too much money, nothing special here. YMMV

I had the same color 1979 Z28 but this one looks a shade lighter than the original dark brown metallic. Steering wheel is not stock which had a Z28 emblem and a textured, fake string-wrapped grip. Vinyl upholstery has been re-done, as original had a perforated-look texture. Carpet on the lower door panels of the deluxe interior is gone too.

I had a 78 Camaro in that color of Dark Brown fresh from the factory. Non Z car. But much darker. Black interior, 4 speed. Fast car T-Tops no-A/C or radio. $7,800.00. Out the door.

Looks nice. I don’t know what they’re worth these days and I prefer a 4 spd, but someone will buy it. I like the color. I’d have to find the 5 spoke Chevy wheels. I always liked them…
