Aluminum V8 Gasser! 1962 Chevrolet Corvette

There’s nothing like a big V8 in a small car. The seller says this is a fun car to drive, and I believe them! Other than the lack of a roll cage, this thing looks ready to race! It is a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette and is said to be a former race car that is now converted to a straight-axle gasser. It can be found here on eBay with a current bid just over $27,000. Located in Morristown, Tennessee the car has already been modified so there’s no shame on the buyer’s part to drive this thing.

As with most race cars, the engine is the heart of the beast. You are looking at an all aluminum 427 cubic inch V8 that started with a MoTown block. It was built by Bill Mitchell and features a ton of go-fast goodies. The gas tank and battery have been relocated to the trunk for better weight transfer. The seller doesn’t have any performance numbers in the ad, but I’m betting this thing will lay down some great 1/8 or 1/4 mile times.

The interior looks like it’s in decent shape and hasn’t been hacked up too much for racing modifications. There is a custom panel with a couple of gauges under the dash behind the shifter. It looks to have been done very well and blends in with the interior. As mentioned before, the car will need a roll cage if it is competitively raced depending on how fast it is and the sanctioning body rules.

The body and paint appear to be original, although the owner doesn’t say much about the history. There are quite a few paint cracks which are typical for a lot of fiberglass bodies. With the flexing of the fiberglass combined with enamel paint, it can cause some cracks. I don’t know if that’s the story with this one, but it wouldn’t be surprising.

Overall, this is a really cool car, especially from thirty feet. It would certainly draw attention wherever it goes. It has a great look and should be a blast to drive. Let us know if you think this car is as cool as we do. What would your plans be for it if you bought it? Would you change anything or enjoy it as-is?

You’re thinking of pretty much EVERY other big block except Chevy’s. They are all in the back. One look at the valve covers of a Chevy engine will tell you if it is a SB or BB👍

427 CID small blocks are not that uncommon. I’d street cruise the crap out of it, battle scars and all.

The eBay ad clearly states that is a small block. Bill Mitchell World Products will sell you a dyno tested small block up to 454 cubic inches.

I hate to see anyone ruin a nice car like this. Some people don’t know what to do with their money. It’s like moving two mountains to get it back right. Which the new owner probably plans to do.

First thing would be is to take that straight axle out of it and give it back under the manure spreader, put the front suspension back to stock or a Mustang II based suspension and go on the Hot Rod Power tour or the Drag Week and have some fun with it, Yep its definitely not a BBC, but a it is a Big SBC . I’d rock it,,,,,,,oh yeah, just one more thing, change the Cove area back to White .

Probably red cove originally, the mods were probably done back when this was just an old car (they weren’t always all that desirable…) Leave it and drive the snot out of it! Too cool!

Put the proper front suspension under it, bolt on some aggressive looking wheels/tires, and drive it…for short trips.

No reason not to do the above suggested changes and put it on the street. This guy could be a bunch of fun.
