Amazon Near DC: 1968 Volvo 122S for $800

1224

This relatively solid and rare Volvo 122S find was sent in by Barn Finds reader Olaf E. It’s located in Deale, Maryland and has the same seller as a group of MGB’s featured here. The car is advertised here on craigslist for $800. I’ve never even driven one of these, although I’ve found them attractive and have heard good things about the experience. This one comes with a lot of spare parts, including the two sets of carburetors on the roof and another set in the trunk. As the seller states, “if it doesn’t fit on my 544 you can have it with the car.” There are two new fiberglass fenders to take care of the rust there, and looking over the rest of the car it doesn’t seem to bad. The seller says the worst rust is in the driver’s door, the left front floor, under the tail lights and the spare tire well. The engine turns over but the seller hasn’t tried to start it. As the seller says, “E-mails asking ONLY if the car is still available will be laughed at, reasonable offers will be considered, reasonable offers made while standing next to the car with cash in hand will be accepted.” How much cash would you offer, and would you make it sound and drive as-is, or refurbish this Swede?

Except for the color and condition, I owned this exact car back in the mid ’70s. It was as rugged as you would expect, but part of that ruggedness was that it was very well built and therefore heavy. Easily able to keep up with traffic but not a sportscar in a sedan’s clothing.

It’s too bad this one was stored outside in the woods and weather. It will be worth buying only if you are a Volvo fanatic and willing to pump a lot of work and money into it. The strange thing is that the seller is knowledgeable about these cars, but took the intake off and then neglected it so that it went downhill outside for what looks like many years since the vinyl upholstery is toast. I don’t get that.

I agree, this is a good deal. I think the 2 door is kind of rare, I only remember 4 doors and wagons. Lot of work here, just to get it driving, much less shiny and new looking. They were great cars. Perhaps Mr. Colin Powell can use this. He’s got a couple of these. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/03/04/automobiles/collectibles/04volvo_span.jpg
