American Breadvan: 1975 Corvette Sportswagon

If you need to drive a Corvette, 1975 was probably one of the years to avoid. Lower power, reduced compression, the elimination of the big block – things were not good in Corvette land. However, there are ways to make lemonade out of lemons. One option was to customize your Corvette with a period kit provided by Greenwood, which basically converted the ‘Vette into a miniature breadvan, with inspiration taken from the one-off Ferrari 250 SWB. The exception being, you can buy this one here on craigslist for $7,000, a far cry from the lofty valuations that one-off Ferraris tend to command.

The seller includes a link to a page with the Greenwood conversion’s history, but don’t be confused – his isn’t the one and only version built by the Greenwoods themselves. Many replicas were made, and I’m fairly certain over van conversions were provided by different aftermarket companies. There is definitely some cache to owning one of the genuine Greenwood kits, as the company generally holds some superiority over other aftermarket vendors of the period. The seller notes the paint is a 20-footer and should be redone.

I’m fairly certain this is a custom interior of sorts, as I don’t recall Corvettes coming with this much added bolstering. The door panels match as well, and I would rather see this returned to a clean set of leather bucket seats and corresponding panels. The automatic transmission is leaking due to bad seals, and ultimately relegates this Corvette to particularly uninspiring performance given the aforementioned performance penalties of the 1975 model year.

The seller notes this engine may have some extra juice, however, courtesy of an aftermarket camshaft. No word on any other recent maintenance, other than the seller noting the engine was “redone” prior to his purchasing the car. This can mean any number of things, but perhaps there’s an amateur rebuild under the hood with some other performance tweaks made. Is this breadvan Corvette rare enough to justify the $7K asking price? Thanks to Barn Finds reader Ikey H. for the find.

1975 has a special meaning for us in California. It’s the last year for smog exemption. I like it. Shooting-brakes are awesome.

CARB didn’t do their research & messed up the cutoff year – by one. Ha ha. Should actually be ’74, since ’75’s were the 1st year most vehicles had cat converters, except trucks, CVCC hondas, & fiberglass floored ’75 & ’76 Bricklins – how did THEY slide by?!, since Vettes had converters & had to switch to a metal floor, due to the insane heat generated by those blasted & dangerous(if u ask me) things.

Might be cool for a pizza delivery vehicle or advertising car. Wonder if the guy warmed up the mill. You can make chicken salad out of Chicken $hit, but its hard to get the taste just right. Those MT valve covers gotta be an extra 50 HP. LOL.
Anyhoo, good luck to the new owner!!

Figures… close(ish) to me, a weird design that I like and a price I can afford. Just no place to put it!

I must say…. I have to disagree with your opening statement. A 75 Corvette is most desirable due to it being the last convertible until 1986… just my opinion though.

Man, this is so cool. I wish I was closer to be able to inspect it. Definitely one of the best listings.

I love this thing, except for the seats that belong in a Buick.

Jeff, I think you meant to use the word cachet in reference to the prestige one might have in owning a greenwood car. Although the word cache , meaning a place to store or hideaway something ,may be more appropriate! Eeesh.

Sure beats the last two conversions that showed up in the last few weeks. Puts a little style into the bumper cars.

man, if it wasn’t for the interior this thing would be super cool to cruise as a daily.
sourcing some decent seats & door panels etc shouldn’t be too much trouble.
    pick a color & spray away for a never-see-another-one semi-practical sportscar

Deleted, presumably sold,or it would be headed to my garage.Probably the best conversion I’ve seen in years.Donate the seats back to the Buick, replace for maybe 1500 bucks and have a ball.

This has to be the nicest shooting brake design I’ve ever seen on a Corvette. Well done Greenwood!

I bet it runs better then you’d think, it shows headers and an aluminum intake + said cam change with a recent rebuild, those mods seem to wake up a small block Chevy. The seats remind me of my Dads ’88 Chrysler 5th Ave. This car appears to be taken care of compared to the others previously listed.

I disagree with the opening I had a 75 vette, rebuilt the engine with new mushroom heads and some other work still numbers matching, rebuilt the th400 trans with a shift kit and the rear end. after all that 325 hp to the rear wheels. drove it everyday until my son came. that was a lot of fun.

U-G-L-Y damn why do people have to force there version of what’s cool on the rest of us!!!

Tim, nothing is being forced on anyone. This is true democracy at work, if you don’t like it you don’t buy it. Conversely if this is to your liking, obviously it was to at least one person as the listing is down already indicating that the car is sold, then it finds the buyer. Obviously I wouldn’t be looking for one in your garage ))

I purchased the car. The story above is incorrect. Purchase price was not 7K was a tat bit more> Needs a gas tank and brakes, but its a solid greenwood car. May sell if you shoot me a good number i have 6 vettes, I can let 1 or 2 go. I have the molds to make the Mako shark 2 corvette as well.
