Another Mulletmobile! 1977 Z28 Survivor

We’ve noticed before here at Barn Finds that cars of certain types seem to come on the market in groups. The second-generation Camaros and Firebirds (and their sportier Z28 and Trans-Am brethren) seem to be flooding the market at the moment. This allows us to alert you to survivor gems like this 1977 Z/28, being sold here on eBay where bidding is up over $7,500 as I write and has not yet met the reserve. The “Red Rocket” (what a high school acquaintance called hers, albeit somewhat inaccurately) is located in Danville, Virginia despite wearing North Carolina license plates.

I found out here that W. Nat Terry was president of the Danville Tobacco Warehouse in the late 1960’s, so I’m pretty sure these pictures were taken in Danville. The vintage background suits the car nicely, and really highlights how clean the body is. The seller tells us that this is the original paint, there’s no rust, and that it’s been garaged since new!

I happen to be a fan of multi-colored stripes and closeup pictures that show no issues! I really like this car.

No surprises under here either. Apart from how clean it is! The car has been shown since 1982 (!) and “lots of trophies” come with the car.

At first, I thought that funky colored dash panel wasn’t original, but I’ll be darned if it isn’t! I’m not quite sure what Chevrolet was thinking, though. As with the rest of the car, the interior looks to be in really nice shape. Yes, I’d rather have a four speed, but as a commenter noted recently an automatic kinda suits these cars.

Whew! I was happy to note that the stock parts such as the air cleaner that have been removed are all included. I think that’s the first thing I’d fix, along with going with some less garish spark plug wires. The seller says “everything works,” so I hope that includes the air conditioning. If you want to relive your high school days, how many of you would do it in a car like this one?

If would have had a ‘Camaroo’ like this one in high school, I’d be happy to relive my past. Since I had a 36 Chevvy, I’m more prone to relieve it.

Nicely optioned example. I can see power windows, locks, tilt wheel, cruise control and a/c. Very nice.

Nice car, until you get to the engine compartment. Too many cheap chrome pieces make it look tacky.

Unfortunately the AC won’t work without the compressor.

Buddy of mine had one just like this years ago, but it was a 4-speed…liked the ole car, and because of it’s 3:73 gears, ran pretty well….

At least it is an AC car and most of the components are in place. It reminds me of big collars and gold chains. This car is hard to ignore. I like it because it is a survivor.

At a low enough price, just down road on lot they are asking 15k for one that looks hard driven and not kept up),, this would be nice ride.
If driven and .maintained will hold value and may even appreciate.
Although power down a bit easy upgrades, all GM cam kit , stock heads of even 305 flow well, add tires +shocks corner decent.
See lots this style but not Z so be sure of pedigree, as Z option without top suspension upgrade no more than badge. And bling.over standard.and from YEARS BACK EASILY cloned.

77 was the first year for the re-introduction of the Z/28 so it may eventually command a premium? regardless this one is loaded and in great condition. I would be proud to own it, good luck to the next owner!

They’re flooding the market because the owners don’t have the hair left to pull off a mullet.

I won the bid on this Z28, I am in the process of putting it back to factory original, getting rid of the cheap chrome and getting the AC put back together. My wife, then girlfriend, had an identical Camaro throughout high school. After high school, I joined the Air Force and we married; we kept the Z for several years, we owned it from 1997-2007. I regretted getting rid of it, when I noticed they were few and far between. Starting in 2010 almost daily I would check Craigslist, cars-on-line, eBay, and all the other sites looking for this vehicle. I was getting on a plane, Africa bound, and found this one. The wife and I feel like kids again riding around in the ole Z. I found other z28, but they either were 4 speed cars or didn’t have power windows, or didn’t have AC, etc. The point of this purchase was to have exactly what we had before, and it’s great.
