Another One! 1980 Bonneville Coupe Survivor

c5

While not quite as nice as the 1978 we featured recently, this 1980 Pontiac Bonneville might be worth considering anyway if you like large, boxy GM coupes! This one is selling for less than half of what that one went for ($10,800), so a few blemishes might be worth taking on anyway. It’s located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and is for sale here on eBay. $3,850 will buy the car now, or you can make a lower offer.

c1

The seller tells us the car has 118,000 miles, and apart from a small dent just in front of the left rear wheel opening and a few door dings on the right front door, the only other issues are some brushed in touch up spots. Other than that, it looks like all the paint is original.

c6

While it’s a rather angular profile, somehow it comes off looking pretty nice, especially with the wheel spats in the rear. The vinyl top appears to be in pretty good shape as well. Tires are described as a matched set, but with only 30% tread left, so you might want to factor in a set into your financial calculations.

c4

The inside is all original, but certainly shows some wear in the velour upholstery. That being said, I could live with this for a while. I’ll bet the couches…I mean seats are still comfortable! We are also told that all the power options are functional, although you have to hit the cruise switch “just right” to make it work. However, the 8-track player works great–I’m surprised it has an 8-track player; I’m wondering if the seller means cassette player? Oh well.

d7

The 301 Pontiac V8 is attached to a Turbo 350 automatic and is said to run and drive well. The carburetor has recently been rebuilt and the water pump is nearly new. Remember, this is less than $4,000 if you buy it now, and potentially even less if you make a lower offer. What do you think?

This is too tempting, it’s just a couple hours away from me. Got to fight back the urge to add another project.

Impressively well preserved but it just isn’t pushing my buttons. The Torino in the background however….

Yes, that’s an 8-track. You shoved the tape in through the radio dial, which swung up out of the way.

“Shove”! Well said. That’s what was required. “Place” or “Insert” just wouldn’t be appropriate. Those 8-tracks were big. They needed a “Shove”

I found this ’88 Caprice Classic in our local classifieds for a mere $1,950:

No winters, original paint, barely over 60,000 miles… Looks like a good deal!

and that’s $1,950 Canadian so here in the U.S. it would be even less n’est-ce pas?

Nice car, and 8-track players were installed from 1965 to 1983.

I was buying 8 Tracks of all my favorite current artists of the day up until around 1982. Installed a few under dash and glovebox players in most of my cars until I couldnt find ’em anymore.

these are the types of cars that are going to be showing up more and more at car shows, like it or not. Us late 30’s and early 40 year old guys grew up on these types of cars, and while we do love cars like the tri-5 Chevys, Vettes, Mustang fastbacks, et al., we aren’t willing to mortgage our homes to have one. A sub-$4k 1980 Bonneville 2 door however, looks awfully attractive to guys like me.

What’s up with the air cleaner.. It looks wrong for the car with that rubber looking seal , the smartphone won’t allow me to blow up the photo but so much.

This car is aching for a Pontiac 400 , maybe a Ram Air 3 with a few hidden upgrades. Looks like the 301 unless you know what to look for and you likely would never know until your doors had been sucked off by grandma’s grocery getter..Add in a 700R-4 you can pick up cheap to rebuild then you have yourself a real sleeper. Some. Nice button tuck velvet seats in red..period correct..yes, I’m having a vision, …sure it’s angular and a bit dated, but I’ll take it over the bland bubbly bombs being mass produced by all the auto makers today. This car is a blank canvas just begging for the right artists touch, resto-mod style..custom width Snowflakes, could be the perfect beginning of a boulevard bruiser just as easily. It’s all there in great shape considering it’s age. If I wasn’t in the middle of another resto-mod on a C3 I’d be all over it.

That type of interior has a tendency to pull your undies to the rear and up. Not very comfortable on a long drive.

Rented one of these when new while visiting Florida. Loved that 301 engine. Went back to Toronto & looked into purchasing one. Turns out all the ones up here came with the Chevy 305 engine-Yuck. No Sale.
