ASC/McLaren Special: 1986 Mercury Capri

1986-mclaren-capri-convertible

Ford’s Fox platform was quite versatile and served as the base for a wide array of vehicles. Of course, most of us associate it just with the Mustang. However, it was used for all kinds of family sedans, coupes and hatchbacks wore the names of Lincoln, Mercury and LTD. One of my favorites to use this platform is the Mercury Capri, although it’s really just a restyled Mustang. While the Mustang was offered as a convertible, Mercury opted to only offer the hatchback body. The good people at ASC/McLaren decided to corner the market on drop top Capris, so they got Ford to send them a small number of hardtops to be customized. They also built some tuned coupes, which are quite cool too. This Capri is one of their convertible conversions and is one of about 350 built. It needs a complete restoration, but would be a fun driver! You can find this rare drop top here on eBay in Deerfield Beach, Florida with a BIN of $1,950!

I,m trying to like this, but just cant find the love for it. Even with the McLaren name. White with the blue int. doesn’t seem to work(I do like the recaro seats though). Maybe someone will like it.Theres worse out there.

Whenever I took my blue asc mustang out people thought it was a Chrysler
    Lebaron. Embarrassing!

      Those look like LeBaron wheels.

The front end looks so heavy with the long expanse ahead of the wheels. Somehow reminds me of having a snowplow attached! Odd.

I can appreciate 99% of the cars and equipment on B.F. but that is one ugly auto.

I owned one 1985 jalapeño red tan leather recarro seats I miss that car it handled great and simply moved for the year. The center console was full length under it was c channel steel for structure since they removed the complete top.

This is an unfortunate picture because the cars, to my eye, are very attractive

The windshield is more raked than a standard Mustang convertible

My boss had one in the early 90s and I always liked the car. There is one in
similar condition, not far from my house

Does not Doncaster justice. They look better in person. If it was blue it would have been better.

I like Fox Mustangs a lot, and I hope this Mclaren version looks better in person, but except from the rear at first glance I would not have guessed it was a Fox body. That battering ram front and the side view don’t appeal.

OTOH, the price is low, only 70K miles, the seller says the drivetrain runs strong, it might be reliable with some fairly simple fixes, the seller seems honest, and it’s a rare convertible.

After growing up and living in Southern California for 40+ I’ve seen just about every cool car and special edition out there. I moved to a small Kansas town this past April, and I’m shocked as I drive around the and spot some awesome cars just rotting away parked under trees, in driveways, ect. There is one of these ASC Capri’swith maybe 2psi of air in the tires a few blocks from me……a few blocks in another direction is a house with a 69 Chevelle SS 396 and a 64 Impala SS just rotting in the driveway (Yes I’ve asked t buy/save them, but turned down as they were “grandpa’s”……There’s another house with a 65-66 Fastback mustang in the yard parked next to a 71-72 el camino…….I always wonder how some very unique cars ended up in this small town…….And Ihaven’t even mentioned the awesome restored cars That come out on nice days (split window vettes, GTO Judge, GTX’s, etc)…..who knew??

I’m Looking for an ’85 T-Top Capri GS 5.0 in Jalapeno Red/Grey exterior with Grey / Red piping Recaros Grey interior. Must have 5 Speed, no air, fastback glass with louvers and power windows, factory orderr delete everything but heat and what’s listed.. as equipped from the factory. I sold mine in 2000 for a C3 Corvette, big huge galactic mistake. Fellow that bought it totaled it inside of a month. These were Carburetted cars with a 4150 Holley, roller cam, no computer, just a cat and air pump and respond very well to modification.

Was thrown out of 75-80 and Capitol Raceways for running 10.90’s and 11.10’s respectively on both tracks test and tune without cage, suppression and helmet. Was supposed to be in 13 second bracket not supposed to ” break out ” is what I think I was told…long time ago on a Friday night now…anyway, After I put the cage in with pin-in door beams, 8 point weld in with complete intact interior, no expense spared, I sold it and never was able to take it back to the track.

This car was mint and garage kept rust free perfect inside and out, with 67K miles female one owner before me. Traded in I found it on a local super size dealer (Schaeffer and Strominger here in Towson, Md.) in 91, I payed 3K$ for it. Then dumped another 15K into it over the following decade, November 1991 to March 2001..Car was well known in the area…adult owned by me and FAST!!!!..

I threw the entire kitchen and sink of 5.0 Mustang go fast parts at it from the F-303 cam , equal length MAC shorties, H pipe, 8.8 3:73 Trac Loc, world class T-5, connectors, cage with removable door beams, to the, GT -40 heads, forged crank, pistons, rods, and much more, rolling on BBS black mesh wheels 16″ with 2 inch lip 255 50’s. MT stickies 5 lug conversion 31 splines ..disc brake rear conversion out of the Motorsport catalog… next step was a Vortex or Paxton, never got there…Car was fast and light, handled like it was on rails, quad shocks upgraded rear suspension and torque boxes.., just under 2900# wet. tops out.. I need to find a bone stock survivor, just like mine was when I started it. This is my bucket list car, I have ads out and looking everywhere for one.. please post follow ups if you know of one like it listed for sale. These are extremely rare, as Hen’s Teeth, no basket cases please…. I will get notifications…as I am subscribed to the thread…. thanks!😉
