Assembly Required: 1939 Mercedes-Benz 170V

left-2

The Mercedes 170 V was built from 1936 into the 1950s. Normally, I wouldn’t hold much hope for a project like this, but for a car this cool, so perhaps there’s hope. This Mercedes is a “Cabriolet B”, 2 doors and 4 seats. There are a lot of parts included, but it’s not complete. The engine is not frozen. It’s listed here on eBay in Hallandale, Florida where bidding has reached $8,200 but hasn’t reached reserve. The auction ends Tuesday.

floor

The floor looks pretty solid on this side. That dent in the cross member may need to be repaired though.

There are piles of parts included. Hopefully, not too many are missing. There appears to be lots of duplicates, so hopefully some parts are usable.

parts

The engine is present and not frozen. The 1.7 litre engine put out just 37 horsepower, but remember this was built in 1939. The transmission is a 4 speed with syncro on all 4 gears. There’s no way to know, of course, how many or what parts are missing. These are wonderful old cars but they are not worth a great deal, perhaps $50,000 for a condition #2 car at auction. This would be a labor of love, lots of love.

I owned a similar if not identical car. Mine had a Diesel and was an ex German police car with a slick new red paint job. Most of them I have seen were post war manufacture, this might have a bit more value if it really is a pre war car. They are a bone simple robust car that would come together rather easily. Not a lot of trim or anything remotely fancy. I bought mine from a Mercedes dealer in Trier Germany and sold it to help finance the purchase of my Maserati Mistral. Great cars that are appreciating with the European market.

Looks like a yard sale in it’s 6th hour. Wow.

Hope you have a parts guide with diagrams and a trunkload of patience.

    Looks very clean though!

When I see bidding like that, I”m convinced – the guy’s got his friend’s shilling it to just below the reserve. No real buyer with actual money would pay what it’s reached already.

Never seen so many dents in a car body, even the entire floor seems to be dented everywhere! But then again, it’s a ’39, and went thru WW2. There are a lot of differences between pre war and post war 170 M-B cars. Post war cabrios go for about half what a pre-war will bring, in similar condition.

Plus, I’ve seen post war cars outfitted with pre war front fenders & headlites, coming out of the former east Germany, being offered as pre war cars.

Look at the one Peter Kum#$@ has on sale at Gullw&^$ Motors… This is a f’ bargain compared to that. Talk about inflated pricing. Geez.

It has wooden frame at the back. In case it is rotten, be ready to pun hand deep in your pocket. No. Not yet deep enough, much deeper!
