Back After 35 Years: 1963 Mercedes 220S

right

This Mercedes is listed on craigslist in Elk Grove, California for $7,000, down from the original asking of $10,000. It appears very original and looks pretty nice. It has a 4 speed manual for you to row through. The paint is said to be original as is the interior. The seller says it has only 82,000 miles and that it runs and drives well, although it does need a master cylinder. He says the car sat for 35 years, yet the seals look new.

It sure looks nice in the pictures, but the owner doesn’t say what steps were taken to revive it. The interior is reported to be leather and not vinyl. It has AC, although not the factory AC. It is a well optioned car. From the pictures, the chrome looks great and there’s no apparent rust or body damage. I think this could make a great, reliable driver like my Mercedes, pictured below.

I restored my old Mercedes, pictured above, over 20 years ago and it has been a great driver and has needed very little work since. Parts have been easy to find. The master cylinder shouldn’t be an expensive problem, but it probably needs other brake work from sitting. If the car is anything like it’s described this Mercedes could be an inexpensive classic driver. If anyone is interested, it’s nearby and I would love to have an excuse to go see it (No charge, of course). I would love to have a closer look. How about you?

Hi David, I’m very interested. I’m in Largo FL. Could you please take a look and respond back with your thoughts? Thanks.

An Air Force buddy of mine got a 230S after he got out of the service, I liked the small tailfins and the smooth 6 cyl. engine. His was black.

It’s surprising and encouraging he sold it so quickly. It must have been as nice as it looks in the ad!

Looks nice in the ad you say? The carpet over the transmission hump is worn away. The seat back on the passengers side is stitched loosely together at the seam. I wonder what the seat back is like on the drivers side being its used so much more. I say from these flaws that this car has a lot more than 82,000 miles.

Been looking for one for a while now. This got the blood pumping but the Canadian dollar hit an 11 year low today so the fact that it already sold is a relief.

I am just looking at this and the ad has been deleted.
THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT WAS SOLD.
In my opinion the first few barnfinders started flooding this man’s inbox and he immediately pulled it. Did I read it was listed for $10k a while back ?

From the photos this looks like a tired and worn candidate with few new parts on it.
    NO underneath shots ??

How could that possibly sell ?

if it did , then I will get started on mine right away,,,,

If these photos are (supposedly) of the same car ?
I never saw the ad , so I don’t know, but
    1. Photo #3 shows an Ivory car with ivory steering wheel and shifter handle, CA License #NBJ 344
    2. Photo # 1(?), 4(?) and 6 show an Ivory car CA Lic # ETU206
    3. Is that dash in Ph#3 Green ?, looks gray/black to me.
    4. Look at the location of the mirror on photo #3 and compare to photo 1 and 4

The different car #3 is an example that the writer of the article owns and he was presenting it as such it is not the car that was for sale.

I’m exasperated too Gerry. Some people just don’t read.

        well, well, well !!!
How exasperated can you get if one exuberant and exhaustingly exhilerated, but exorbitantly and inexplicably excited or extravagantly extroverted commenter should see his exponentially inexcusable ways and should try to explicate his wrong doing and attempts to exonerate himself from inexplicable excess and extensively tries to excuse his erroneous and extraneous explanations and exultation.
How It can be to deal with nincompoops like me, who don’t read the text.
Well, that’s true, I didn’t read the whole thing, I’d rather look at the photos, BUT honestly didn’t expect somebody’s partial life story on a barnfind article either.
