Backwoods Poncho: 1956 Pontiac Star Chief

1956 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Front Corner

This Pontiac Star Chief has been in storage since ’64 and is in desperate need of a restoration. The Star Chief was considered to be the most prestigious cars in the Pontiac lineup and this convertible was as prestigious as they came. This Star Chief Convertible can be found on eBay with a current bid of $2,025.

1956 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Rear Corner

This car was the seller’s first car and he got it in 1960. In ’64 he put it in a barn and then later he moved it into a wagon shed where it’s been parked ever since. He has always wanted to restore the car, but he sees now that it’s probably not going to happen, so he wants to see it go to someone who can restore it.

1956 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Front

It’s sad to see such a regal looking car rot away, but this one maybe past the point of saving. We are hopeful though that someone with a love for the Star Chief will find this car and bring it back to its former glory. The car is mostly there, but is missing a few trim pieces.

1956 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Engine

The engine was swapped out at some point in time with this ’58 Bonneville’s 370 ci engine and transmission. The engine looks like it’s pretty rust and the seller didn’t say whether the engine turns or not. If it does turn, than it might be worth buying the car for the engine alone. The 370 was only offered in ’58 and there weren’t many 370s built.

1956 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Side

This Star Chief could be a valuable and interesting car to own, but it’s going to take a lot of work to get it back on the road. We hope it’s not too far gone and that the right buyer sees this car and gives it another chance.

Don’t know why this would be considered “too far gone” – I’ve seen FAR worse brought back, and a few even looking like this one does NOW driving proudly at the Woodward Dream Cruise (been to every one, live just off “the Strip”) Plus, this is a rarity, not a lot of these convertibles out there, and that engine ! Somebody will save this gem in the rough !
