Bargain Z: 1971 Datsun 240Z

Earlier today we featured a beautiful 240Z, but the seller was asking an astronomical amount for it. So we thought we would go hunting to find a similar condition 240Z, but at a more realistic price. After doing some searching we actually found another one on eBay, plus it has a manual transmission. The current bid is at $10,000 with the reserve still unmet and a BIN price of $24,900.

While we wish it was painted in the more eye catching orange, this car’s original bright red paint is in great condition and looks amazing. We are sad that the original wheels and mirrors have been changed too, but on the plus side these parts were dealer installed options and with the headlight covers they make the car look very sporty.

This car’s 2.4L straight six looks great and is unmodified. The seller even has receipts for maintenance going back to 1980. We bet running through the gears in this Datsun would be a blast, especially on some curvy back roads. The original exhaust has been swapped, but at least it was swapped for a nice sounding ANSA exhaust system.

We really like the 240Z and we are glad to see that there are still some really nice examples floating around. We’re even happier to see that the seller of this car is asking less for it. If the car from this morning sold for their asking price it could be a new record and it makes this one look like a bargain. We have no doubt these cars will go up in value as more people find out about how great they are to drive. Hopefully the seller has set their reserve lower then their BIN price, but either way this is a much better find.

    That is a EARLY ’71 as it has the vents in the hatch door and not on the c-pillars. That was because the removed those vents early on in production because exhaust fumes would get sucked into the passenger compartment.Also, most early Z’s had their original wheels swapped out for aluminum slots by the dealers.

    What a beautiful car. Knew a guy that had one in the mid seventies, folks had figured out how to make them go faster by then. Scared the crap out of me on a road out in the boonies, but once I saw that it could go around a corner like a slot car, I was always begging for rides.

    I have a ’83 280ZX; all original with approx. 43k miles. It is a great running car and exciting to drive. The T roof makes it a perfect warm weather car. I don’t know if $25k is the right price for this ’71 but $10k would be a steal.

    The early Fairlady Zs in Japan actually had their exhaust stacked like this one, but this just looks like an Ansa turned sideways.

    A popular mod for these was to make a “Scarab Z” by dropping in a high HP smallblock Chevy V8.Back in the early 80s, I had a buddy on the SF peninsula who put a 500+HP Chevy 350 in his, along w a racing 5-speed, custom rear pumpkin, custom suspension, roll-cage, z-rated tires, etc. etc….From the exterior it just looked like a stock 240Z w nice tires/wheels, a front fairing under the bumper, & some added vents in the hood. But when the engine started you instantly KNEW it wasn’t any ordinary Z. & when it took off like a rocket down the street you just WISHED that you had one!!It was known to do regular high speed runs along what we called “the Autobahn of the peninsula” (I-280, between San Bruno & Los Altos Hills), and frequently flew past Ferraris, Porsches, & even the occasional Lambo…..That was a FUN CAR!!
