Barn Bike: 1930 Harley-Davidson

1930 Harley-Davidson

We have featured a couple of these old Harleys, so I thought this one might be worth a mention. Like most 85 year old motorcycles, it isnt exactly original. But, the fact that this thing exists at all is amazing. This one is claimed to run well and shift decent. It will still need some work and doesn’t have a title. That would present a problem in my State, but it might not be an issue in yours? It’s located in Lumberton, North Carolina and is listed here on eBay where the auction ends tonight. Admittedly, I don’t know much about these old Harleys, so can anyone fill us in on what makes this one-cylinder so special?

Cool. From what I can find, it appears to be a 1930 Harley-Davidson model 45 Pup, made from 1926 until 1934. It’s single cylinder was 345.73 cc, 4 cycle. It must have been painted at one time, as olive drab was the standard color. A lost title is always a pain, no matter where you are, but it can be done. (Usually just an inspection) Not many of these around, I’d bet. http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections/items/396639/motor-cycle-harley-davidson-single-cylinder-pup-1930

I seem to remember that these were export bikes. Rare for a collector and seen as under powered for the US when new.

Cool patina and beauty marks. I would leave it as is and put it in the back of a rat rod truck of that era. Not many of these around that are not restored. You can unload it and putt around at meets, even with the bald and weathered tires

It would be great if you could add a section on motorcycles.

I think that this model was often referred to as a ‘Pea Shooter.’ Rugged and reliable but definitely lacking in the power department. If you were patient it would still take you where you wanted to go and bring you back.

I think the pea shooter was an earlier Harley racing bike. I know that Dale of What’s In The Barn nearly shat himself when he found parts to one in a military surplus warehouse. I think he bought all of the bits for 3 grand.
