Barn Find Benz: 1938 Mercedes Benz 170V

1938 Mercedes Benz 170V

This 1938 Mercedes-Benz 170 is for sale by Gullwing Motor Cars, which has a reputation for selling interesting classics in any condition. Gullwing is located in Astoria, New York, where this Mercedes, and many other amazing cars are for sale. Thank you, Russell G, for the tip. The car is listed at $89,500 here on eBay as a classified.

There, unfortunately, is not much information listed about the engine, drivetrain, or the condition of anything mechanical. The car should have a 1.7 liter four-cylinder engine and a four speed manual transmission. An interesting piece of information is that the engine is only mounted in two places and back in the day, set the standard for smoothness out of a four cylinder engine.

Being that this car is a convertible, you can clearly see the condition of the small interior. The listing says that it was a barn kept car for 40 years, which seems to have actually kept both the interior and folding top in surviving condition. The wooden dash is in really good condition as well. The previous owner had it since 1968 but was unable to get around to restoring it.

While this car does seem to be a more unique, rarer vehicle in the United States, one can be had overseas for significantly cheaper, and in much better condition than the price of this one. One would really have to weigh their options with this one, by the time parts are sourced, purchased, and shipped, it might be more worthwhile to try to import an already running and driving example. So, do you think you’d go through the task of importing one or restoring this one?

Gullwing almost always is overpriced for the conditions of what they’re selling. Nice car – not worth their asking price!

These guys did a price switch. Gave a decent offer and then gave a low offer.
    Not a fan.

I’d rather have a Packard of the same vintage than a 4 pot Mercedes.

Hitlers personal car? I’m sorry, I got that from my old man,,,M-B got such a bad rap after the war, any German car, for that matter. Totally unwarranted. Took them years to live down that image of dictators riding in an open Mercedes.

Hope a European buyer gets this, as fabing parts here in the States is BIG $$, I’ve been down this road before. The convertable top will run you close to $15K if done right with the multi-plies of fabric and rubberized liners. Old imports just don’t do well currently, looks like the market is seeing the old timers pass away and the younger kids are’nt really interested.
