Basement Bird: 1957 Ford Thunderbird

basement-bird

People stick their Thunderbirds in some weird places. This one was recently pulled from a basement where it had been stored for over 10 years. I’m guessing it was a basement garage, but it looks like some drywall had to be removed to get the car out. The last inspection sticker is dated 1976 and apparently it was down here undergoing a restoration. The owner never finished the job, but it looks like a lot of work has already been done so hopefully it won’t take a lot to get rolling again. This Bird is located in Hardwick, New Jersey and is listed here on craigslist for $8,250!

Here it is out in the daylight. Let’s hope they grabbed the hardtop and all the boxes of parts laying around down there! The engine and transmission are included, but the seller isn’t sure if they are original to car.

This is a first generation Thunderbird, so I am sure someone will jump on it. These are my personal favorite T-Birds because they were true “personal luxury” cars. There was only room for two inside and the outside looked great! You had a few power options in ’57 including a supercharged engine, but it looks like this one had the 245 horsepower 312 V8. It was still a respectable performer and definitely deserves a restoration today.

Good start but you could buy a nice running one for just a wee bit more money

I don’t think $8250 is too crazy given it has has both tops. Nice running ones seem to be around $25K, so could this one be finished for $16,750? Probably not unless you were able to do a lot of it yourself. My only complaint is these 2 seater T-Birds just don’t have a lot of leg room – I’m 6’4” and had to sell mine because it just wasn’t comfortable. Anyhow, this is a good deal for the right situation.

I agree witth Don you can buy a nice one for 20,000 +/- without all the high cost of a total re do.

The woman in the first photo is probably saying to herself: “About time that junk pile us out of my cellar/garage!”

Flipper may be right. This guy Adam is tied to at least two cars I found with his number on it, a GT-40 and a Pantera. His location was the same in CL ad. Hardwick NJ. But his phone traces to Rochelle Park. On the other side of Jersey.
