Beater Bavarian: 1970 BMW 2002

beater-bavarian-1970-bmw-2002

This 1970 BMW 2002 was recently pulled from long term storage and it’s looking a little rough around the edges. It appears to be solid, but is going to need lots of work. Given that its a base 2002, it could make for a great vintage racer or even a Bavarian rat rod. It can be found here on eBay with bidding still under $1k.

The interior is very rough, likely as a result of the missing windshield and the rolled down windows. It is going to need just about everything replaced, which makes turning this into a racer even more tempting. Sadly, this one came with a slushbox, but it could always be converted to a 5-speed.

The seller doesn’t state whether this is the original 2.0 liter straight four or not, but they claim that it turns over. It will obviously need to be gone through before it will be ready for regular use. If your going to go to all the work of rebuilding it, you might as well perform a few upgrades while you’re at it.

This Beater Bavarian has lots of potential, but it could be a challenge deciding what to do with it. The seller has installed new tires since taking these photos, so you could throw in a new windshield, get the motor running, and use it as is. Or if you have more money to invest, you could restore it or better yet, build it into a vintage race car. What would you do with it?

Cute as a button, these are. They all have one thing in common……..as though they beg to start rusting.

        Fie!
I’m going to assume that you misspoke and meant to say Targa Newfoundland which, despite being on the opposite end of the continent from this car, is a tad closer than N.Z.

Yeah that’s what I meant. Brain fart.

A bit too rusty and neglected. Auto slushbox hardly adds any value. Flush front turn signals and “roundie” taillights (as they should be for that year) are just about the only redeeming features, in my opinion.

Altho it’s a desirable round taillight car, the auto trans pretty much cancels that out. The rusty spare tire well raises a red flag, but the trunk looks good, so it might be OK underneath. A big question is, What’s the result of having no windshield? The biggest risk is that water might have gotten inside and rusted the floors and damaged the electricals under the dash.

I doubt you could bring this back to excellent driver status for less than what it would cost to buy one that’s already there….and already has a 4-speed.

I bought a 76 2002 new. It rusted out the front fenders in less that 4 years. These thigs rust so easily. I would never buy one to rebuild. I still drive BMWs though. :)

Had a 1602 in the early 70’s. At least this one does not have rot behind the front wheel wells.

Looks to me like water stains up the bottom 1/3 of the car. I’m gonna pass on this gem.
