BF EXCLUSIVE: 1979 Triumph Spitfire

If you’ve been on the hunt for a classic that just needs a good cleaning to be a fun driver, this Spitfire might be the car for you! These car’s are dead simple to work on, but this low mileage barn find has already had all the major work done to make it ready for the street. It was parked for a number of years in a heated barn, so it needed a little work. Bob P, the seller, has already done all the heavy lifting and all that’s left to do is give it a good detailing! Bob is asking $5,500 for it and the car is currently located in Cleveland, Ohio, so if your interested be sure to message him via the form below.

A true barn find! It’s been sitting in a heated barn for the last 11 years. 22,008 original miles. Has overdrive and a factory hardtop, new Michelin tires, and a new top. We’ve removed the radiator and had it boiled out and checked for leaks. Reinstalled with new radiator hoses and fresh coolant. We have also replaced the clutch master and slave cylinder and bled the system with fresh fluid. The oil and filter have also been changed. Brakes were changed by previous owner and are all new.

Car starts and drives great. Yes, there are a few dings in the original paint from sitting in the barn for so long. Seat covers are worn and there is a crack in the dash top. All gauges work, all lights work and wiring is complete. Alternator was rebuilt. Previous owner also switched to an Allison electronic ignition system as the Lucas Opus, from the factory, usually went bad on the way home from the dealer! Floors are solid and the frame is one of the best I have seen on a Spitfire. It needs a new home where it can be cleaned up and driven.

Having owned and driven a number of Spitfires, we can attest to how fun they can be to drive. They are fairly easy to work on, parts are plentiful and they are cool looking little cars. They do have their flaws, what car doesn’t though? Getting in and out isn’t particularly easy, especially with the top up. The engines aren’t all the powerful and can have durability issues. If this one truly has 22k miles on it though, it should have plenty of life left in before it will require any major work.

Of all the cars we’ve revived, few are as cheap to fix as a Spitfire. This one is going to need a little work to be a nice driver, but a good bath, some polishing and a good interior detail will make it a decent driver. This really could be a fun affordable classic. Our special thanks to Bob for listing it with us and we wish him the best of luck. If you have a dusty classic that needs a new home, please consider selling it here on Barn Finds!

Finally, a Spit with O/D. While more like 122K, it could have been a cared for 122K and with the O/D, the engine has a lot less “motor miles” on it. I’ve driven both, non and O/d, and the difference is night and day. Note to seller, clean it up. You’d be amazed at the results you will get. It’s a sharp car.

Has all the best upgrades, and fun little cars. Note,, A Datsun motor is not hard to drop in these along with the 5 speeds and can scoot right along. Not sure on this price,, havent followed them lately but seems optimistic, But I bet with some elbow grease and some cleaning-detailing come spring you might do well on this.

I’d rather have this Spitfire than a TR7

Josh, it’s interesting that the current owner apparently purchased the car for $500. and now wants 10 times that amount. Obviously there’s some dollars invested in the thing, and they are fun cars with cheap parts, as someone else said. I would try it for less money, I agree with the person who thought the price was too high. I have no more room but somebody should jump on this car if it’s everything it looks like it is.

That price is a tad high for a rubber bumper car. But the O/D does add considerable value. What’s hiding under the dirt?????
