ENDING SOON! Big Bore W/ Overdrive: 1962 Triumph TR4

If you follow the site, then this TR4 may look familiar. I bought it back in December and we have had a lot of fun driving it and working on it since. The only problem with looking at cars all day is that you are bound to find something else you want more. I stumpled into a TR3 last month that had to come home with us so now we have more cars than parking spots. So with some regret, I’ve listed this little roadster here on eBay with no reserve!

As much as we all love a good project, there is something to be said about a car that you can jump in a drive home. The drive home was actually fun too because that already torquey four-cylinder engine was fitted with 87mm pistons when it was last rebuilt. So it has a lot of grunt and pulls surprisingly well. Realizing that the overdrive worked was a nice surprise too!

Even the interior is clean on this one. Well, we did clean it but nothing was missing or damaged. This TR4 was restored by the previous owner over 20 years ago but they have maintained and enjoyed it every year since. It’s not cosmetically perfect but it’s very presentable and fun to drive. We couldn’t find any rust either and that seems to be the biggest battle with most classic cars.

The rack and pinion steering column makes the TR4 easier to drive than the earlier TR3 and the windup windows are appreciated in cold or wet conditions. These cars are handsome too with their subtle styling and wire wheels. We had a fun time cruising around while we secretly pretended we were James Bond. He may have never driven one in the movies but I’d much rather have this Triumph than that Sunbeam Alpine of his. What do you think?

And therein lies the addiction in classic cars, there will always be something you want more. Sorry to hear the “4” didn’t work for you, my experience is, the “4” is a much better car than ANY “3”, and someone that thinks like me, will get a great car. I considered a British roadster, but am looking at a ’65 Willys CJ today, a far better investment for me. Not to blow sunshine up the staffs rear, but if you’re looking for something like this, I wouldn’t dawdle.
BTW, most of us were just kids when “Dr. No” came out ( 1962) so I don’t remember the Alpine. James Bond will forever go down as driving an Aston Martin to me.

The first car we see James Bond driving was a powder blue Sunbeam Alpine in ‘Dr. No.’

Maxwell Smart ‘Agent 86’ from CONTROL drove a Sunbeam Alpine in the TV series.

Actually to be correct, the first car you see James Bond driving in any movie is a 1957 Chevrolet convertible……

Hope the Willys works out for you Howard. I know how dejected you’ve been over the current car market (as all of us non rich folk are). I know you won’t be surprised at the rough ride and poor handling of it : )

Hi Eric, the Jeep was a bust. I swear, that’s it. The crap these people want $6 grand for,,,well, it isn’t going to be me. I’ll just continue to drive my FIVE FIGURE Squarebody ( cough), and I’m done with this foolishness.
Btw, In believe Maxwell Smart also drove a blue Karmann-Ghia convertible and a gold Opel GT.

Howard, there’s no giving up! That’s the fun of it. Just when you think it’s over, things change. Just keep looking and saving and learning. How can you loose buddy? Remember you’ve got all of us to entertain during morning coffee………

I have a TR3, added rack and pinion, they ruined cars with those “roll up windows”.

I own a 58 TR3 that’s in great shape, a daily driver, and I must agree that a TR4 is a greatly improved car. They share engines and transmission, and there’s no shade on either, but the sophistication of functional windshield wipers, roll up windows, R&P steering and IRS are tremendous improvements for ease of the driving experience. The classic feel of the 3 is marvelous, while the more genteel ride of the 4 seems more inviting as a daily driver. If I weren’t in the midst of selling my 3, I’d be writing for more pics of this great looking 4.

Great car- I always loved the front end treatment on the 4’s, with the hood contoured to the headlights.

Metal dashboard makes this one of the first off the line. There was a recent article in one of the several auto mags that I read following the restoration of, I believe, CT0001 or 0002. Interesting that the engine restorer chose to paint the cylinder head AH blue/green, and appears to installed an aluminium radiator and electric fan, eliminating the handcrank hole that early TR4s retained from their ancestor. This would look great sitting next to my TR3A and TR7, both white, but its appearance in my driveway would probably ensure that I would not be able to celebrate my 77th birthday in November, and it would be up for sale again, along with the 3, the 7, the Herald and the Jamaican. Too bad, pretty car.

Oh yea the Jamaican, mine has Healey roots. I got it with full intention of extracing the completely rust free Healy chassis that lies underneath, but once I got it and saw how well someone had put it together, I couldn’t bring myself to disassemble it.
