Black Gold: 1979 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds W30

By 1979, Oldsmobile’s performance lineup didn’t pack quite the punch that it had a decade earlier, but this fairly rare black and gold 1979 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds W30 was nonetheless a good performance car for the era that it lived in. It can be found here on craigslist in Cottage Grove, Minnesota with an asking price of $5,500.

Like the 1981 Buick Regal Indy 500 replica that we saw recently, the Olds Cutlass of this era was a nice car. Like ’em or not, all things being equal, they were good cars and GM sold jillions of them. For an extra couple of thousand dollars, a buyer could have checked the W30 box and walked away, or driven away, with a car like this black and gold Hurst/Olds.

This car looks great in black and gold, I haven’t seen too many in this color combination even though they reportedly made more of the black and gold cars. It was one of only two color combinations available with the other being white and gold. Some white letter tires would be fantastic, I would add that to the list. Unfortunately, one factory wheel is missing so add that, too. The seller says that this car will need some work or a lot of TLC, as they say. They also say that it will need a little bodywork before being painted. The underside looks great.

There are no engine photos, unfortunately, and they talk a lot about it so it’s disappointing to not see it. It would have looked like this. This car hasn’t been started in 14 years so it’ll need to be checked out thoroughly before attempting to start it. The seller talks about doing a lot of work on the engine and the 170-hp Olds 350 V8s were fairly potent engines from the factory, at least in this era, and this one sounds like it was quite a ripper with the extra work done to it. The 1979 Hurst/Olds had the famous dual-gate Hurst shifter which this car has. Have any of you owned a Hurst/Olds?

I’d dump the 350 and put in a warmed over 403.

I sent the pictures and a little back story to the BarnFinds email. So hoping they post it for people to see as I am not sure how to post pictures in the reply section.

Probably the nicest downsize Cutlass before the front drive ones. Someone was wise to stash this one away. This is what happened to most of these in my neighborhood.

I had a ’79 Cutlass Supreme. It was terrific. It died at 138,000 miles. On a Freeway in California. Lunched the engine. If I had the room I’d buy this car now.

I think they might be seat covers.
