Blank Slate: 1949 Chevrolet 3100

This old truck looks cool, but it needs some attention. The engine is partially disassembled, there’s some missing glass, and surely a little rust has to be hiding under there. Those things would normally be negatives, but if you want a project, this could be the perfect place to start. What route would you take though? Factory fresh restoration, full custom, or rat rod? There are so many ways you could go. Take a look at it here on eBay and let us know what you’d do with it.

There’s the 216 cubic inch inline-six that came standard in these trucks. It actually had impressive power for the time, but wouldn’t a small block V8 be even better? See, it’s easy to dream when a vehicle is sort of rough and less than complete. A full restoration wouldn’t be off the table though because the parts supply for these old Chevys is very good with many new reproduction parts still being made.

The interior wouldn’t be hard to bring back to life. The floors look solid in the photos so some fresh paint and an upholstery kit would work wonders in here. When restoring or customizing, one has to value the simplicity of an old truck like this. There’s less to fix and less chance that you will mess something up…

This truck is claimed to have been out of the elements for the past few decades. Besides the battered up paint, it does look relatively solid and straight. Perhaps the next owner could just focus on the mechanicals and interior while they save up their pennies for a new paint job. The shiny stuff is very expensive these days so that factor should always be considered before you start sanding. Personally, I’d go that route. Get the engine running, go through the brakes, install new glass, reupholster the seat, and you’d have one tough looking work truck!

I see the seller has branched out into Chevrolet trucks, the supply of early Ford and Mercury trucks must be getting thin on the ground.

He does have a knack of finding cool cars.

They can always be made to look new again. And they’re nice drivers before and after, as long as you aren’t in a big hurry. You can drive it and fix it; above all, enjoy the heck out of it.

Finally someone with a shred of decency, not asking $9,000 dollars for a $2,000 truck, and even that’s a stretch, but it is 2017 and these are hot. It has a snowball’s chance in Hades of staying original.

Seller states the rust “is very minimal.” Umm the photos don’t seem to bear that out. Way too rusty for my taste, although I do love these Chevy pickups from that era.

Where do you see rust? I just checked out the photos and can’t see any.
