Bring Your Friends: 1962 Morgan Plus 4

This 1962 Morgan Plus 4 is a stalled restoration project that began in the early 1980s but hit the skids following a minor fender bender. The car has been parked since, and remains in seemingly good condition despite its years of storage. While 2+2s are generally not desirable compared to their two-seater siblings, I like the proportions of this stretched Morgan just fine. Find it here on Hemmings with a $16,000 asking price.

Here’s the damage that supposedly caused the restoration to be tabled. The fender did take quite a whack, but it’s certainly repairable. The rest of the Morgan sports a pleasant patina, while shiny bits like the bumpers and grill are presentable (but not perfect.) The old parking/registration stickers are a great look on this vintage Morgan and should never be removed.

The interior looks surprisingly complete, with no major damage to the dash or steering wheel. The seats will need restoration, but hopefully the cushions themselves are still usable. The paint inside the car seems to confirm the Kermit-the-Frog exterior is indeed its original color. The seller notes all deteriorated metal and wood was replaced at start of restoration – a huge deal.

The engine was overhauled as well, with less than 2,000 miles since a major refresh. The seller notes it is out of a TR4, but doesn’t say whether it still turns over. This Morgan has been idled since 1982, so it likely needs a fair amount of prep work to run again – even with the prior rebuild in its history file – but it looks like a well-cared for original car that just needs love.

Never paid for love and I don’t see $16Ks worth here.

Maybe the wood was replaced 37 years ago, but that doesn’t mean it’s like new. On the up side, I wouldn’t be surprised if Morgan still has the buck for that fender. I would want to hear the engine run before I called it a $16,000 car. Sometimes it seems like there are more Morgan projects out there than Morgan built.

@Andy. I doubt there is a buck for the fender as Morgan bodies were mostly hand built back in the day. The man that made the right hand fender most likely wouldn’t be able to make a left hand fender!

Jezzz Marie…. so you are not going to finish your resto project.
Take, like two minutes to throw a tarp over it, will ya?
Just sayn, see this all too frequently.

Most of the parts are still available, many on this side of the pond and TR engine parts are easy to source. A new wing (fender) is a stock item. The four seaters are much more comfortable than the two seaters for anyone over five ten since the seat adjusts. At 16K, after ina investment of another 10K, it could be sold for….20K.
It’s not about the money. They’re hand built and easy to work on.

I think it is a good deal for a 1962 model.I imagine owner /sellor has air cleaner unit? Wish they had some rear shots of it.

Have never seen factory air cleaners for TR engines in Morgans because of the close clearance with side of the bonnet. Some owners have fabricated very thin, minimal cleaners that keep out the boulders.

You would think they would have modified the hood/ bonnet to accommodate one /them?

4 Years ago my father, according to the insurance company, “totalled” his 1961 +4. They gave him a check for $26K and we did the buy back for $2500. Same side as this one but much worse. He did bend the subframe into a pretzel, fender was 3x as bad as this one but chassis and bonnet were not damaged. For under $11K I had it back on the road in 2 years. Most of that money went to the body shop and many new parts.
