Budget Big-Block: 1969 Mercury Marauder X-100

1969 Mercury Marauder X-100

Here’s one I was seriously considering for myself! It’s a 1969 Mercury Marauder and although the seller doesn’t provide many details, it appears to be a X-100. The X-100 was the sporty version of Mercury’s full-sized Marauder. Well, sporty might not be the right term, but it did have all the features shared by Ford-powered muscle cars of the era. The big 429 was there. The Magnum 500s were mounted. And the visual drama was provided by a blacked out trunk lid. This big Mercury may not have competed well against the day’s top street racers, but it looks like a bargain today when compared to other big-block bruisers. It’s located in Hansen, Idaho and is listed here on craigslist for $6,000. If anyone here buys it, I expect you to stop by Boise on your way home and give me a ride!

When I was growing up, the local Deputy Sheriff in Flathead County, Montana provided his own car and received a car allowance and county gas. He had a widow who would buy these big cars new and he would get them a year or so later. When I left for the Navy in 73, he was driving that exact car in red with a matte black rear deck.

Those Marauder wheels are made by Kelsey Hayes and are called Magstars. Mercury referred to the flat black rear treatment as Sport Tone.

The bucket seat/console option looks awesome in these cars! My 69 X-100 has power windows, cruise, tilt, am/FM stereo, and console w/buckets.

I get a lot of reaction to this old car when I drive it around!

Looks decent but I would need a lot more details to pay him 6K.

Such nice cars, Bryan, that car is really nice. I think this may be just a Marauder painted like an X100. Wiki sez, all X100’s had fender skirts, unless they were removed, and I don’t see the X100 script on the front fender, like Bryans, just a yellow light. Either way, again, nice cars, Bryan, awesome, but what a crummy ad!

The hidden headlight 69-70 Marquis noses are a guilty pleasure from when I was a kid. In the Big Car muscle realm, these are an underappreciated gem. Yeah, OK, it’s a Ford but still….There’s a guy in Staten Island whose running mid 14’s in a highway geared stock XL 429. I don’t see any wheel opening moldings on the qtrs., so this might just be a legit, skirtless X-100

    At 6k, no. But a 3500.00, all day long……

I love these. Not sure why even. Always have. Never see them around here.

The skirts add tremendously to the look of this car; without them, the Ford XL origins become a little more obvious. I’ve wanted an X-100 since I first saw one years ago; I bought this red Nevada car a year ago last April. It’s original paint really shines but has plenty of chips and scratches….I plan to have it stripped and repainted towards the end of summer.

The 429 runs great and the car is a smooth riding cruiser. I’m not a fan of the Autolite 4300 carb however. Here’s a shot of the rear of my car; the flat black tail is a very distinctive styling element.

Always liked these, particularly the X100, which was pretty unusual. Bryan, yours is quite the looker. Someone on my local CL has been trying to sell a non X100 with a 390 and a three on the tree.

Some product packaging in the early or mid ’70s had a graphically depicted rear 3/4 view of an X100. Not sure if it was Matchbox Superfast or maybe some line of car parts.
