Budget Sports Car: Bradley GT

Bradley GT project

Our readers have sent in a lot of these over the years, but we have yet to feature one. Kit cars are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I thought this Bradley GT project looked clean enough and the price seemed right too. With the ever rising values of traditional classics, something like this presents a bargain for those of us who are more interesting in wrenching and having a good time. You will need to source an engine before any fun can be had, but that shouldn’t be a problem because this is a Beetle based kit. Find it here on craigslist in Caseyville, Illinois for $700 as a roller or $400 for just the body. Thanks goes to Robert R. for the tip!

I like the look of this one with its faded paint and rocker stripes. Bradley was an American company and they cranked out thousands of these GT kits over the years. Luckily, they used many components from other common cars so keeping one of these on the road shouldn’t be difficult. Since this one is missing the engine, I’d be tempted to look for a flat-four that has already been souped up. Obviously, this car is never going to have the quality or prestige of a production sports car, but I bet you’ll get just as many looks and have just as much fun doing it!

So, are you ready to make you mark with a Bradley GT?

I bet it is already sold, that seems way too cheap to me! I cannot contact him, as I have no phone!

I remember this car from watching “Hardcastle & McCormick” when I was a kid.

@Rich, that was a similar appearing car called a Coyote, modeled after a McClaren M6 GT.

Nope, it’s legit. If we are going to do an April Fool’s joke, it would be a lot more creative than this!

Thanks for the post and it’s still up with the owner’s phone number.

Keep them on the road, Robert

There’s a antique shop about 2 miles from where I’m sitting that has had a Bradley GT body sitting out front for the last two years with no takers. Based on that and the price of this one, I’m thinking there are only dozens of potential buyers for the remainder of those “thousands” of kits.

A friend had one way back. Didn’t build it, just bought it. Not a great quality kit. Felt like a dune buggy with a shaky roof. There were many around back then. Did they use a full length VW pan? Or a shortened one? A hopped up dual port 1600 would make it blast around, I’m sure.
