California 4×4: 1987 Toyota Pickup Xtracab

This 1987 Toyota Xtracab pickup was already a dry California survivor when the seller got his hands on it, but then he took things a bit further and made an already tempting truck more desirable. The market for these old-school Toyota pickups has been hot for a while, especially in four wheel drive form like this one. The Toyota is listed here on eBay and while it’s not exactly the one that Marty McFly drove, it’s pretty darn close.

Obviously, the truck is not stock, but the enhancements made are the sort of upgrades many enthusiasts would end up making anyway to a truck like this. This includes the lift kit, larger wheels and tires, bed-mounted roll bar, and more. The seller notes the engine was freshened up when he bought the truck, and doesn’t report any mechanical faults at the moment. The handling is said to be pretty tight, but no word on which vendor supplied the suspension kit.

If the seller is to be believed, the Toyota was pretty solid all the way around before he embarked on a mild restoration. The interior is in outstanding condition, with clean cloth bucket seats, blue carpeting, and a crack-free dash. The seats still look like they provide plenty of cushion, and one would assume the adjustments still work, too. I’ve actually grabbed two sets of old Toyota seats from the 1980s out of junked cars and was shocked to see every lever and knob still worked, despite the upholstery being destroyed.

The seller notes the engine is fresh and there are no leaks, and it’s generally clean under the hood. The real news is the paint job, which the seller describes in detail and sounds as if it was truly well done. The listing states that the truck’s body was sealed in epoxy primer before being resprayed, and all the graphics are new replacements as well. While it’s not completely original, the Toyota still looks like a survivor and a no reserve auction is always a winner.

I wonder if they could get more money without the lift kit?
    Looks like a clean truck.

I personally hate it when they lift trucks.

Lift kits make vehicles much more difficult to load and haul cargo, a pain to get into and out of, handle very poorly, and just look terrible in general.

There are so few unmolested classics left, why do people always feel that lifted trucks are so desirable?

This particular example looks like it must have been in great shape before being messed with, though I would have preferred a “single” cab.

Back in my time it was watching brand-new muscle cars being unloaded at the local dealers. Every month seemed like it brought faster cars.
