For those in the market for a wintertime project, this one might be worth a closer look. This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S, found here on eBay, has had a lot of really great work already done and appears to be a solid driver. The $7,000 asking price doesn’t seem to be too far out of line for what’s already been done to it.
The seller states that the 105,000 miles on the odometer are original to the car. The 350 Olds V8 is said to run well and it wouldn’t be hard to speculate that this A/C car would help keep the interior temps a little cooler.
Speaking of that interior…. $4,000 worth of work later, a potential buyer wouldn’t have to worry about sitting in an old crunchy interior. The seller states that it was redone not long ago, a nice selling point for this Olds. Upgrades like aftermarket radio and speakers wouldn’t seem to pull too much away from the originality of the car.
While the seller states that the car has a “great patina”, it really isn’t the most fitting look here. The car is said to only have surface rust, but it’s not uncommon to find a little more than surface rust on a project like this. With a new vinyl top, bodywork and a respray would certainly be in order here. The car will come with the stock rally wheels, which are a better look anyway. Seeing those green headlights give way to some stock units wouldn’t hurt many feelings either. So, with some cold months ahead, could this Cutlass find a warm place in your garage and venture out looking better in the spring?
Patina (in its current meaning which is just “faded and rusty”) belongs on a truck/van with a legitimate work history, or a racer pulled right off the track and into the barn. This thing needs paint and bodywork. Nice color combo and options though.
If he installed that Corvette engine in it from the first picture it might be worth the $7,000 asking price.
The price seems very reasonable considering that these are almost 50 years old now. Just please for the love of Gawd lose the headlights.
My boss back then had a red-orange color one and i would drive it once a year to the inspection station for him. It was totaled (he was driving) while sitting at a red light from behind, What a shame!!! It was a good running car.

Considering what one have to pay for Abody cars these days, this must be a decent buy , especially with the seats already done. Anyone buying a car in this price range must expect a respray – so why pay more to get a car with slightly better paint…? Don’t think the prospective buyer can go wrong with this one…
Per license plate frame, car was sold in Sacramento Ca., mostly likely why it has factory a/c.(SAC is smokin hot in the summer, days on end of 100+ temps. In S.F. no one ordered a/c as not needed) Odd it was sold as used in Sept. 72 with only 3k miles. It looks to be in San Fransisco’s “sunset” district(aka “the avenues”). >LOTS< of fog in that part of town from late April to Sept., and wet streets. surface only, unless it lived way out near the beach.
