Calling All Baby Boomers: 1965 VW Samba

1965-vw-samba

After the 21 window project we featured sold for a jaw-dropping $25k, we had to mention this one that came to market yesterday. It is a 1965 21 window and although it is far from perfect, it does run. There is some rust, but it looks like a deal at $24k when compared the bus from the other day. It is located in Quebec, Canada and is listed for sale here on TheSamba.

This looks a lot more appealing than the one a few days ago. Price is a little more in line as well. As far as what they go for these days, there’s a saying: ‘A Fool and his Money are soon parted.’

Gotta remember that there are former Woodstock vagabonds now turned into doctors & lawyers through the years that still might have a streak of sentiment in them that drives prices for these.

    The Location
This one is in Quebec City. Three facts:
    1) The most European city in this side of the Atlantic, by far. Wonderful to visit.
    2) The second hardest city on cars, after Montreal. Much snow & salt from November to April, sometimes October to May.
    3) It’s way East, about as far as Bangor, Maine, but North. For most people, LOTS of driving.

    The vehicle
Worth a look if you are in the market. No pics of the underside, the most crucial area, but the engine bay looks respectible and so does the interior, which makes me think it did not suffer through multiple Quebec winters. Who knows, maybe it started out in California? The paint will be a disappointment if you expect shine, but if there’s no rust underneath that’s easy to accept.

The price is probably not out of line if it checks out and if you really want a 21-window bus. If you pay a bit too much now, it won’t be too much next year.

The seller wants a quick sale, so go with money and make an offer he can’t refuse. US dollars will do….they love ’em up there.

Yep, compared to the last one, this seems reasonable. I never thought these things would fetch such prices, but ya, there’s a sentimental aspect at play here. It looks pretty much complete and running, but driving it home to anywhere would be risky and excruciatingly slow.

Nuts. Y’all Nuts. I sold a near perfect ’67 with a Westphalia camper interior I transplanted into it back in the late eighties for six grand……..I thought I really made out.

Still have a perfect set of tinted roof windows somewhere in the garage.

That being said..this has some serious roof rust

I will be in Montreal for a few days visiting family. I owned one there in the 70’s and its primary use was to take the neighbourhood kids out for ice cream. Many happy memories of that time and place. I have spoken with the owner and am scheduled to see it Monday afternoon. It is not in Quebec City but about 30 minutes drive outside Montreal in a town called Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.. I’ll know much more after inspecting it and talking to the owner. Clearly it has needs and has had some modifications – he refers to a different roof for example – but from the price, pictures and description it does not seem like a bad place to start – more next week and any advice in the meanwhile is appreciated.

I had planned on seeing this Van today. However I woke up to literally freezing temperatures and a slight return of the bronchitis I have had for 3 weeks – not a good day to be crawling around on the ground. It appears they had a very short summer here in Quebec, I am away until June but will be back for a look if it is not sold sooner.
