Can Am Replica: 1974 Corvette

1974 Corvette Greenwood Wide Body

Update 1/30/16 – This one still hasnt found a home. The bidding is up to about $3k and there’s a BIN price of $4,750. Will someone take the plunge?

From 12/9/15 – There’s little doubt that the ’70s were dominated by extravagance. Despite the arrival of the Malaise era, there was still plenty of wild styling and loud pipes to go around. In some cases, the fashion statement was more impressive than the performance behind the bodykit. This 1974 Corvette here on eBay wears a replica Greenwood CanAm body kit, made by a company called Eckler’s – and it’s wide, baby!

The seller says that this Corvette has survived some serious obstacles in its life, from garage fires to grim death by car crusher – which begs the question, why did this custom ‘Vette come so close to being pulverized? The body kit alone doesn’t hide the fact that Corvettes from this era were entering a period of decline as it relates to performance. Some enthusiasts, however, might argue that the widebody conversion gives this Corvette a reason for living. The active bidding certainly seems to validate that sentiment, though it falls short of the Buy-It-Now price. To be fair, of all the Malaise generation tragedies, the Corvette fared the best, offering decent styling and performance compared to its counterparts.

This car has a lot going for it – it’s a 4-speed manual with the posi rear end. The seller says the body kit was installed correctly, with no bonding issues present and that the car won lots of awards in its day. However, he does disclose that the frame is in need of replacement, so it’s safe to assume that poor storage and its location in New Hampshire means rust is a problem. But he’s including a replacement frame with the sale, which is further than most sellers would go. I wonder how many Corvettes survive today with a Greenwood/Eckler’s kit still intact?

Here’s what the finished product could look like, if you choose to restore this unique ’74 Corvette. It’s not bad, in my opinion, as far as body kits go. I love the exposed plexiglass headlights but it’s clear our eBay car is lacking the front chin spoiler, which I can almost guarantee went missing the first time it was shoved around a garage or storage lot – how hard will that be to replace? If you’d restore this fat-fendered Corvette back to its award-winning glory, let us know in the comments below.

Boy…if there was ever an uglier aftermarket dress-up kit, I haven’t seen it. Please, cover it up!

It’s funny how ones taste changes with time. Back in the 70’s I would be drooling for this car. Now I think the design is just ugly

Cannot see a C3 without thinking about someone finally making a C3R body kit. If only…..

Never could get an interest in these cars.. If the fiberglass doesn’t cure properly, or the seams aren’t clean, the cracks appear and the panels split…

They’re fun to look at though..

I think this kit is about the ugliest thing I have ever seen done to a Vette. The C3 had nice lines right from the factory all this kit has done is f@#k this car up they my as well crush now.

That one was/is listed on a Vette forum I’m on. Yes, the frame is toast – the seller states as much. He picked it up cheap and is simply flipping the car. As a parts car, there still isn’t $6K in value in it.

I found this on the side of the road in NH or Mass while out for a m/c ride one day. Had a for sale sign in the window. No one came out while I was looking. Thinking the asking price was much higher than listed above. I probably would have jumped on it. Sorry about the small sz, but here is my 71 LS5 I picked up after being left out n Fl for years. Runs and drives great now (and has cold A/C) Isn’t pretty, but she’s fun…

I just purchased a restoration project, It’s a 1968 Vette with an Eckler Can Am kit.
Im trying to learn what I can about this car, When was it built, How many were built, was it built in house at Ecklers. Ive added some photos of the car and the inspection sticker if that helps . Im pretty sure its an old kit..
    Thanks Michael Keller
