Carport Find: 1971 Porsche 911T

This 1971 Porsche 911T is a recent discovery after being found languishing in a Missouri carport. Though not running currently, the previous owner said it was running when parked, but the current owner / seller has not attempted to start it. There is floor rot noted and some obvious cosmetic damage to the nose due to an unfortunate hood bra. Find this 911T here on eBay with a $26,500 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.

The seller says the 911 is straight down the sides and that the doors close with a pleasing firmness. This seems to an almost universal criteria among vintage German cars, is whether the doors close with the appropriate sound and feel. Blame it on those 70s and 80s Mercedes with their bank vault-like construction. Note the primer on the passenger fender and no reason / answer given.

The interior is said to be all original and still appears quite nice (and stock) insider. The door panels haven’t been modified for aftermarket speakers, and the dash appears uncracked. The seller notes that the floor rot is contained to the floors and front pan, but that the spare tire well looks and feels solid.

Although it’s not running, the engine is claimed to be numbers matching. It’s curious: I see this inspection sticker and I say to myself, “Oh, OK – not so bad, it was still running in the early 2000s.” I need to remember this optimism when assessing my 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 project, as it was still running all the way up until 2011! Anyway, the asking price seems fair for this non-runner 911T, but I’d still lob an offer in the low $20s to see where that got me.

I don’t understand the appeal here, or of any other poor handling rear engine car. Could it be the name and snob appeal? I just don’t know.

Poor handling? Try a 70’s Corvette. I think in the 70’s and 80’s Porsche did just OK on the track

Look at the right front door jamb and around the edges-maybe its the way the light hits it but I see rust in the jambs and in the seams- Flood damage?? Look at the rest of the pics-door panels look like they got wet. the low rust in the floorpans might indicate it went for a shallow water swim.Debris all over in the nooks and crannies. Caveat Emptor. Still worth the 26 large if it was shallow water??

    Cheers

Exactly right Gaspumps…..telltale signs of al least some flood damage all over the lower portions of this 911. Look at the bits of mud captured by the front bra. That could have, should have been hosed off at least for the photo shoot.

Oh yeah, the tan lines are showing on that one. Swim away as fast as you can.

Let’s see, what was happening on the Gulf Coast around 2002? Oh, yeah, Hurricane Katrina. Flood damage sounds likely. Caveat emptor, indeed.

As long as it isn’t salt water like we went through in south Florida last year you can salvage this car. Have started with worse to get a good car. Yellow car spent a short time in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon Florida after a good party night. Owner hosed it out and filled every nook and cranny with 90 weight gear oil. We got it about 15 years later and managed to build one of our most successful race cars out of it. Like all cars of that era, bare metal everywhere you couldn’t paint. No, it couldn’t climb tall buildings in a single bound…

I bought a 356 B for my boys to completely redo! I have heard cuss words that I didn’t even know existed! Haaaahaaaa! They both get frustrated, but are doing well on it! This is our first Porsche that we or they have ever attempted! So far, I don’t see any grey hairs on either one of them, yet! :-) they would scream bloody murder if I bought or brought another one home!

    Sidney,
You obviously don’t know anything about Porsches or their owners.
