Cheap 390 Fastback: 1968 Ford Galaxie 500

Here is a sweet driver find that is offered for very reasonable money! This Galaxie 500 Fastback is a driver that needs some refinement to be a road going cruiser. For the buy it now price of $3,000 you could have this 390 powered Ford! Check it out here on eBay out of Hudson, New York.

Despite the minor surface rust, the engine compartment is rather tidy. The 390 V8 is a runner, though the seller recommends a rebuild for the carburetor.  Although removed, this is a factory air conditioning car. Also the seller states this is a factory posi traction car as well! With a good cleaning and systems check, this Galaxie could probably be a reliable driver without much effort or time.

With many check boxes filled in on this project, even the interior is in reasonable condition. There is a cut in the driver side of the bench, as well as some wear to the carpet. The worst of the interior is the center of the dash near the speaker. Unfortunately, the dash does have a nasty spot, but the rest of the interior is in fair condition. Cleaning and detailing could likely bring it up a level or two in appearance, and perhaps the upper portion of the dash could be wrapped with vinyl/leather, or perhaps a carpeted dash pad is in order?

Although there is some surface rust, and a little rot, this Galaxie is solid enough to be a road going original. The biggest concerns with this Galaxie are the lower section of the quarters which have matching rot from what I can tell. The rot is focused near the wheel arch, where the engine lower quarter is not rusty. Then there is obvious surface rust is on the hood, upper fenders, and on the roof. At the time of the photos, the only non-rust concern was a “golf ball” sized dent in the passenger side door. Now the seller mentions that the driver side fender was hit in storage and needs to be replaced. Depending on your flavor, I could see this Galaxie being a fair weather driver. I also could see where this one is worthy of a restoration as it is a nice machine. Either way, would you jump on this $3,000 driver?

I knew a guy just out of HS that had a car like this, only a 4 speed. His dad worked for Ford in some capacity, and got it as some special deal. (He also had a Shelby KR500 too, also from daddy, some kids had all the luck) Very few had 4 speeds. I didn’t care for a 4 speed in a car like this, but it was a nice car.

With a four speed this’d been a perfect car for runnin’ moonshine.. nondescript, decently fast with a lot of room.
Based on here say, of course.

Best looking car ever made, and most underappreciated.

Watch for frame rot on these especially
the rear half of the frame where the Panhard rod mates to the body. My late
FIL had to scrap a gorgeous ’67 Galaxie
4-sedan for this reason. His was red
with a white top and looked like either
a taxicab or a police car with the dog
dishes all around. It had a 289 C-6 and
boy, that thing would scoot! On his car, the rear axle seperated from the frame
itself. That’s why you don’t see too many
’65 to ’69 big Fords at your local car show.

My Grandfather also had a 1968 Galaxie 500 which he bought brand new. The car was yellow with a black interior. It had a 289 with a three on the tree. It was a very nice car. In 1976 while replacing a u-joint, we discovered that the frame was completely rotted. He promptly traded it in and got $25 towards a brand new Pinto!

This is so weird. I had a 68 Galaxie 500 also. Red with black vinyl top and black interior 352 or 302 not sure now and traded it for first year Pinto in 1971. Gas prices. Sold the Pinto after 6 months. It was a 4 speed and was constantly shifting between 2 and 3 rd gear in the City. Drove me crazy.

Classmate has a 67 similar to this but had the 427/428 (don’t remember what it was designated) along with a 4 speed. The thing ran like stink, able to burn the tires at most any speed. The thing I think would be terrible would be parallel parking, the rear window looks great but causes a lot of issues in some cases. I know I had a 69 Torino GT and had the same issue.

Ok, so there is some work to be done to this one. It has a lot of serious potential, without breaking the bank. And it is really hard to find a decent used car priced at $3,000.00. But, once again, I am strapped to have a place to keep it. Otherwise, I would be all over this one. Someone is going to get a really nice car. Best of everything to seller and new owner.

BTW, what size golf balls are you playing with? That looks more like shovel marks to me. IMO.

I found a 68 4dr ex police car, here in Virginia that is a heck of a lot nicer for $4500/offer.
Maybe I should sell my fastback 390

I love the big fast back Galaxies with big blocks. This is priced right for what it is…
The yellow plug wires ALWAYS make vehicles faster. 🤪

My first impression was ex- liquor store hold up car, got a menace to it that’s for sure. Pretty neat. Has that 390 been hopped up a bit?
Built before full size cars turned into big boring rectangles.

Since I grew up in the back seat of a ’68 Galaxie with a black interior, the red looks weird to me.
