Cheap Classic: 1962 Rambler

1962 Rambler

Another “barn find” from the Oakland, California impound lot, this solid-looking entry level classic is for sale here on eBay with a buy-it-now of $1,100 or best offer. Obviously, for this price the car isn’t going to be perfect. But there’s a 6 minute walk around video in the auction listing that makes me think this AMC isn’t that far from being a runner. There’s even a factory shop manual in the trunk! No, it doesn’t start right now but it does turn over. I’m guessing a flush of the fuel system would have it running. The paint I could live with for a while, and it wouldn’t take too much to make the interior livable. This one could really be fun, and at that kind of price, it would be neat to tool around in for a while. What say you, Barn Finds readers? Anyone out there willing to give this Rambler a shot at being loved again?

Looks to be quite solid. Unique, and cheap. But..what happened under the hood? Looks like someone had a hissy fit with a box of spray paints.

Maybe someone wanted to paint it but had a bunch of rattle cans with only a few drops left in them. I had a friend that painted his SBC that way. I think he emptied the heels of 7 cans.

These cars are easy to work on, the owner says there’s a $295 paperwork fee, if you read the add it goes up to $395….what’s up with that???

yes that is a big issue along with the fact for the paperwork fee you do not get a title or tags because it is a lien sale to cover the sellers claimed costs to tow and store the vehicle. someone else has a valid title to this and the other vehicles the ebayer is selling. good luck paying an attorney to sort that mess out.

Very good deal on this one. Hope someone picks up this for a driver. Easy fix from what I can tell.

It does bring back the memories. This was our 1962 Rambler station wagon with our 1967 Chevelle ahead of it in 1969. I hope this finds a new home. Folks tell me the rear of my 65 Mercedes 220S looks like a 1959 Rambler, so perhaps American Motors was actually ahead of its time!LOL!

I just arrived in CA.. cars have to be registered every year or put on a “non operational” basis. If not.. past reg fees have to be paid. PLUS a penalty.) They dont tax cars here as they do elswhere… one pays higher reg fees (depending on the cars value) instead.of property tax. .hence a buyer here will have to address the back reg fees (its actually up to the seller to do it). ..3) cars after 78 (?) have to be “smogged”..ie tested for ca smog laws. This cost money too .)I dont know what happens if you take the car out of CA…(Why do es CA do this? They want to get old smog makers off the roads…and I suppose get old junkers out of yards too..and raise revenue). I see some cars going as “parts cars.” Im not sure if that skirts the law. I hope i have this right for guys like us interested in old cars.
CA is a great place to look for cars…they dont rust here! Well…mostly! Hope this is helpful.

When I lived there they called it cash for clunkers. The state offered $500 for any old car to get it off the road.

Not too exciting to drive, really. I do wonder about the Saab 96 in the background …

Somehow this reminds me of a Russian built car.
