Clam Shell: 1976 Buick Estate Wagon

Clam Shell

If you’re looking for a vehicle with enough room for the family and an occasional trip to the hardware store, don’t get a pickup or a SUV. Get a station wagon! The minivan damaged the long roof’s sales and the SUV finally killed it, but there are still plenty of reasons to love this Estate. It drives like a car, but has the capacity of a truck. This one is in amazing condition too and I think it’s even attractive. It’s located in Wallingford, Connecticut and is listed here on eBay where the auction ends tomorrow.

455 V8

With a 455 cubic inch engine, you’d think there would be plenty of passing power. Unfortunately, the low compression engines of this era were down on power compared to earlier offerings. Fuel mileage wasn’t any better either. Luckily, this one appears to be ready to go so the next owner can drive it while they investigate other options. Perhaps they could convince Howell to put something together for them?

Buick Interior

If you thought the engine bay was clean, check out the interior! This is a clean cruiser that could make a comfortable daily driver or long distance trip mobile. There’s a third row seat that pops up from the floor so there’s plenty of room for all the kids during the week. Drop the back seats and you can haul enough materials to build a small shed on the weekend.

1976 Buick Estate Wagon

You wouldn’t think that any station wagon from the seventies would be considered attractive, but with its wrap-around rear glass (clam shell) and wood grain side paneling, this Buick most definitely is a looker! The seller has done a lot of work to keep it up and I would be proud to take over where they left off. What do you think – would you pick this over a modern SUV for your daily commute?

That’s a nice looking wagon, I wouldn’t mind taking my parents for a cruise in this. ( come on mom and dad, we’re going to the casino and we have lots of room if we win.)

Looks like this car has been on here three times now. If the owner was realistic on the price, he might have sold it by now.

I owned a similar ’76 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon back in the mid-1980s and it was great. Wish I still had it.

11 mpg, easy. Wallows rather than floats over the bumps and curves, you could replace the suspension, and engine, but then not original anymore. Neighbor had one which I borrowed often back then in return for filling it up, a BIG car.

Station wagons, lol. They ruined the seats, space and ride and renamed them SUVs. Now they sell like hotcakes.
