Clean And Red: 1964 MGB

front

This MGB is listed on craigslist here in Sacramento, California with very few details or pictures and an asking price of $3,500. It’s a California car so it might be rust free. Other than tail lights and an emblem it looks complete. If it is really rust free, would it be a viable project? All we know is that it doesn’t run and it’s clean and it’s supposed to be an easy restoration.

right-rear

This side looks OK and the trim there. Hopefully the cat isn’t interested in the rodents that live in the car. Those high back seats aren’t original, are they?

rear

What would have scared the owners into giving up on this B? It could be anything from the Dark Lord Lucas to the too tricky for them carbs. Perhaps they were running unleaded in it and now it needs head work. Upon inspection one might find a rust free car with a decent interior and minor problems. It might even have a top. If so, it looks like it could be a fun little driver after repairing the mechanical issues. What do you think this MG might possibly be worth? If there is any interest in this MGB, I’ll be glad to hunt it down and take more pictures.

I can tell a Lucas joke as well as the next guy. But I’m so fed up with uninformed negative remarks about Lucas electricals, I’m ready to tear what’s left of my hair out. The Lucas electrical components on my MGs are working just fine, thank you, 20-50 years after all their contemporary Toyotas and Hondas have been crushed. The unwritten rules of MG maintenance include replacement of all bullet connectors every 25 years or 250,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The same rules call for disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of all switches every 30 years or 300,000 miles, whichever occurs first. That’s right, “disassembly…”. How many cars of any decade have switches that can be taken apart and repaired?

Save your Lucas-bashing for an actual joke session. Otherwise, please note that there are thousands of MG owners like me out there who depend on their 36, 46, 56 year-old MGs for dependable daily transport. We take exception and we take umbrage at your naïve remarks. The only people who spread Lucas rumors are those who have never owned a vintage British car. I love reading my daily BF, but c’mon guys, spare us the Lucas garbage.

Car should have pull style outer door handles, hard for me to tell. Get rid of the seats. I would locate and install a factory overdrive, you’ll be glad you did when freeway driving. Car doesn’t have side marker’s or reverse lamp’s. That’s good because it shouldn’t have. One last thing, unless your a purist, convert the car over to negative earth. My 67 GT drove me crazy because I never switched it over. Sold mine on eBay years ago,car went to Denmark. Wish I still had it. BRG original California black plate car, from Napa Valley

$3500?? Wow. I am currently trying to part out/sell a ’65 – Red – almost complete as well and for WAY less here in Oklahoma and I’m thinking I should be putting it on a trailer and taking it to California and make a few extra $$$!
