Cobra Jet Roller: 1968 Ford Torino GT 428

Ford redesigned its mid-size cars in 1968 and added the Torino to the Fairlane line-up. It would be the upscale model before replacing the Fairlane nameplate altogether in 1971. This GT edition was rare when new, being 1 of just 660 built with the Cobra Jet 428 V8 and an automatic transmission. But its value is surely less now that the motor and transmission are no longer in the car and at least the tranny is MIA. As a roller with some rust, this Ford is in Royse City, Texas, and is available here on eBay for $22,000 (you can also make an offer). Another muscle car tip was brought to us by Larry D!

The Torino GT was a premium offering in 1968, available as a fastback, hardtop, and convertible. The fastback would be the most popular at 74,135 copies with most of them built with engines displacing under 400 cubic inches. The seller’s car was in rare company at just a few hundred were assembled as backed up by a Marti Report that the seller purchased.

As the story goes, this Torino GT was an early-build CJ428 car with date-coded hardware to boot. From what we gather, the engine is still around but is in pieces. What was in the car when the seller bought it was a small-block V8 (302, 351?), but the engine bay is empty now (do one or both motors come with the deal?). Either way, we’re told this car was drivable when the seller took possession three years ago.

The body looks to be okay with a little rust here and there like in the driver’s side door. The black paint is said to be mostly original with no signs of accident damage that was repaired. However, the left fender has been resprayed. The Marti Report says the car was built with a bench seat, but bucket seats were added later, and the interior may be decent from what we can see. Assuming all the parts to the CJ have survived and you can locate another transmission, you may have everything you need to treat this once-hot muscle car to a restoration.

Not unless they guarantee that the 428, and all it’s pieces parts, comes with.

This seems like 2X retail, if it had the engine.

Am I out of touch with the market?

There’s another Torino in the background inside the building.
And a red 66 or 67 Fairlane 2dr hardtop out in the yard.
Include them, and maybe you might get asking price.

$22k FOR A ROLLER = Junk yard dealer retail pricing. Pass on this kind of junk, it would be worth about $500 as it sits. By the time you rebuild the engine if possible or source a replacement motor and trans. plus every thing else needed to get this thing on the road again you’ll probably pass $22K in parts and labor.

It is not cheap nor easy to do a restore, takes 2-5 years if done right. I have 10 K in my 68 highboy and only half done.

More like a 3500.00 dollar car in my neck of the woods. Without everything on the build sheet. Im not your sucker. Motor an tranny alone will cost you a good 15,000.00 grand. Thats turn key. Bolt in an go.
