Comet Needs Cleansing!

So you feel a Ford Maverick Grabber is just too common for you? Want something even more unusual? Well here you go, one 1973 Mercury Comet GT, still wearing its original paint. You’ll have some pretty serious cleansing to do, though! It’s located in Romeo, Michigan and is listed for auction here on eBay. The buy it now price is an ambitious $4,250 but lower offers are being considered.

The seller is quick to explain that the car was pulled from a barn two weeks ago after an extended period of storage. It was last licensed in 2001 in Michigan but before that the car was from Arkansas. The car has just flipped over 100,000 miles, which is interesting as there is a record of an oil change at 99,963 miles in 1991. As you can see from the picture above, you’ll have some body work to do in the right rear.

Although the other rear quarter needs a patch as well, the rocker panels, torque boxes and floors are said to be solid. They may well be solid, but surface rust like this will have to at least be treated quickly and watched closely. You can also see a header in this shot; the original exhaust manifolds are also included. The seller also mentions that the K-member had a close encounter with a rock at some point.

While the interior looks to be in pretty nice shape, a lot of that cleansing will need to be done before this one’s ready to go. It did originally have air conditioning and the under hood components are included, but they have been removed.

The original 302 has been upgraded with a four barrel carburetor as well as the headers, although the Holley is said to need a rebuild (a kit is included). The seller has also added a new starter solenoid, points, condenser, coil, and plug wires, and tells us the engine runs very strong and does not smoke or leak. This Comet now runs and stops, although you won’t be able to put it on the street until you repair the fuel tank leak. I’d certainly want to replace the tires and go through the brakes (drum!) before driving it as well. Are you in a Maverick mood, or would you find this Comet worthy of some watching?

Looks like the rear bumper kissed something too. I think Maverick body panels will enter change along with Mustang suspension parts. This would make for a decent daily driver but not for more than $2500 to 3K. You definitely would have the only one in town.

Would it be worth more if Kid Rock signed the dash?

Too much work to be done at that price.

    That’s a $1500 car at best.

I’ve got one that I’m building that is in better shape than that and I can’t get $2000 for it.

I bet it was a fun car at one time. By ’73 the Mustang had gotten pretty big, and these cars kind of fit the bill like the original. Lot of work, and when you’re done, meh, not the fanciest car, still a Maverick. If it was in nicer shape, maybe, but I can’t see sticking a lot of money in this.

Goodyear Wrangler Off Road Radials on a Comet? Either they were put on to combat the Michigan winters, or someone took it off road, where “the K-member had a close encounter with a rock at some point.”

On Chevy rims, no less. Or maybe Mopar, but they are not FoMoCo.

Mopar, 15×8. I didn’t think a Chevy rim would fit.
