Commemorative Edition! 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera

The 348,000 miles on this 1988 911 G50 Carrera Commemorative Edition are both a testament to the tough-as-nails build quality of Porsches, and also just how far you can go when you maintain a car properly. By my rudimentary math, this 911 has traveled the equivalent of almost 14 times around the world. That, my friends, is no small feat for any car. Find this two-owner, anti-Trailer Queen Porsche here on eBay in sunny Los Angeles, California, with the bidding at $44,100 with just about three days to go. The auction is No Reserve.

The eBay ad optimistically touts the matching diamond blue supple leather seats featuring “F.Porsche” signatures embroidered on the headrests. In most of the pictures though, clunky seat covers prevail, which look like reclaimed fabric from the bench seats of a 1986 Pontiac 6000! It’s no surprise then, to read that the main areas requiring attention inside the car are the sunroof headliner and the driver’s seat. And, unless you can find a donor Commemorative Edition car for an exact seat replacement — highly unlikely — reupholstery is likely to cost a pretty penny and/or ruin the originality (the reason the seller gives for not addressing it!). On a car like this, I’d put in a fresh set of BF Torinos and enjoy the drive. The seller provides a walkaround video of the car, for what it’s worth.

If it wasn’t already obvious given the mileage, Porsche’s 3.2L flat-six is pretty bulletproof when maintained. From the pictures, everything looks tidy and orderly behind the rear axle. All stickers appear to be in place and the seller says this car retains its original engine and G50 five-speed transmission, though no Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche is available. Body-wise, the seller alludes to some rust bubbles on the car but no word on resprays or touch-ups. Panel gaps look to be pretty consistent all around, which is a good thing, but the description omits the condition of the undercarriage/chassis, floors, and rockers. There’s a short video of the seller driving, so you can hear the engine and see some shifting in action.

Along with manuals, over 150 pages of detailed records will accompany the sale, documenting everything from annual services to valve adjustments, clutch changes, and a top-end rebuild. On a car like this, I’d be calling the Porsche dealer or specialist to have a pre-purchase inspection lined up because two special things come together for the lucky buyer of this car. One — this is not a museum piece. A car of this mileage and condition means you can use it daily without guilt or panic about life’s everyday mishaps, especially if you plan to continue the diligent maintenance; Two — you might actually be able to snag this car for a reasonable price. The 1987-1989 G50 Porsches are, at least for me, the last of the truly iconic 911s — especially with the absence of the whale tail. The lines are pure. The color is right. The question is: where does the bid close?

It’s all about the records folks! Look at the bidding. I doubt this car if it had no history would be bringing eye watering numbers. It just makes me sad these cars are out of reach for many of us. I saw a 86 930 turbo on another auction site was bringing over a quarter million. At least I had the opportunity to drive these when they were more realistic.

Exactly ! I have always wanted a 911, but no matter what, as my income increased, so did the price of admission and now I am 60 years old, and have accumulated a few projects so no way to grab one of these……

I had a 79. What impressed me the most was the power and the brakes. I can’t imagine what a 22 Turbo is like.

So great to see a life well lived. It’s a shame that so many amazing vehicles are never truly enjoyed the way they were designed and constructed. I can only imagine the hours upon hours of joy this vehicle has brought to those that had the honor of driving it
