Cool, Dude! 1987 Custom IROC Camaro

As a child of the 80s, I really enjoyed looking at the pictures of this preserved custom 1987 Chevrolet IROC-Z Camaro. It’s listed for sale here on eBay where the buy it now is just under $25,000. With only 19,661 carefully driven miles and a custom paint job signed by the painter, this isn’t the type of car you’ll find every day! It’s located in Corona, California.

While I realize the striping on this car isn’t for everyone, those of us who were around at that time can appreciate the look. And even though most would call it’s performance tepid (especially with the 190 horsepower 5.0 rather than 220 horsepower 5.7 TPI engine) by current standards, with 38,889 produced in 1987 you can’t say it wasn’t popular!

Looking under this car I can believe the claimed mileage. Nevertheless, the current owner is an ASE trained technician and has replaced or refurbished the following since purchasing the car:

  • Distributor cap, rotor & plugs
  • Disc Brake Pads
  • Transmission tail housing seals and pan gasket)
  • Sway bar bushings (both front and rear)
  • Fuel tank and pump as well as pressure regulator diaphragm
  • Heater core
  • Power antenna

There are two sets of wheels that come with the car; the set with blue inserts as shown in the first picture and another set of mint standard IROC Z aluminum wheels with anthracite inserts.

Naturally, the interior looks terrific as well. There are a total of 14 speakers that are all new (replacing the 16 original ones installed during a visit to a stereo shop when the car was new). I’m sure the sound quality is fantastic if that’s what you are into. The car was customized by Pete Santini when new and he signed the dash. Pete is genuinely famous among custom car folks and unlike a lot of “celebrity” connections with cars, this one actually means something — to those folks that are enthusiasts.

Naturally, the under hood appearance is just as nice as the rest of the car. Does anyone have a desire to recapture the 1980s?

I thought this had been featured in the summer and I was right. Even if this was the Firebird, whose bodystyle I almost always prefer over the Camaro, I couldn’t see paying more than half this price. But maybe somebody will.

When you become as famous as Pete Santini, you can come back and talk crap. He is being inducted into the Grand National Roadster hall of fame this year, too. The guy is a legend. You on the other hand, a nobody.

I think it a little early to call this/these “investment grade.” When exactly would that investment pay off? “F” bodies are nice cars but that price is crazy high. I live 5 miles from Corona and there are plenty of these around here for under 10k and equally nice. Frankly, those custom colors against that body don’t look so hot, do they?

As the current owner of a 1988 customized IROC vert, I can truly appreciate this car… For half of the asking price.

Custom painter Pete Santini in Westminster, Ca. probably did dozens of cars like this when they were near-new, it was high-style for a few years. If he did the work I am not all that surprised that it’s lasted 30 years. Pete does good work.
Price at least $5k too high even for a lowlowlow miler.
Nice lookin’ car for its era.

If this comes with a White Snake tape in the tape deck, a fanny pack, a Bad Boy t-shirt, and a pair of zebra print Zubaz in the trunk, I’m sold.
