Decent Driver: 1928 Model A

While there is no shortage of the ever-popular Model A here on Barn Finds, there aren’t many reasonably priced turn-key ‘finished’ cars. This one is located in Junction City, Kansas and is priced at $7,000. It’s advertised here on craigslist in Manhattan, Kansas.

Details are sparse, but the seller tells us the car was restored in 1989, and that it runs and drives, and has always been garaged. These photos are the only three offered. The steering wheel certainly looks nice, but might not be the right color…

This shot of the dash cluster shows us that it’s no concourse restoration by any means, but the hop-in-and-drive aspect of this car is certainly appealing. It looks like an economical start for someone who doesn’t necessarily want to go all-in to get involved with the Model A hobby. Or it would certainly be an easy re-restoration. If it were mine, I would probably look in to whether the paint scheme is correct, it could certainly be improved. Freshen up the interior as needed and hit the back roads. What would you do with it?

It’s really sad these old cars are worth so little, but most folks just have other interests. This is a car I would have to purchase if it was local.

The red steering wheel is factory issue and correct on all cars from start of production October 20, 1927 through February 1929. Most Model A parts houses stock the repros.

I like the colour I’d leave the car as is and lightly use it.

These will continue to drop in value as those who have emotional attachment to them pass them on to those who could care less. They’re getting closer to the point where I’ll pick one up much sooner than I thought I would (when they get to $5K asking for an older resto, bought at $4K I’m in). Although I’m not actively looking, to see one like this at $7K asking is a bit surprising. Typically asking on one of these 25 year restos is closer to $10K.

They’re going the same way as the Model T, look how cheap a decent driver T can be bought for now, have seen more than one decent driver T in the $5K range. A Model A in this condition was $10-12K just a few years ago (in the Seattle area).

Leave the whitewalls alone. Turn the key. Drive.
