Desirable Colors: 1974 Porsche 911 Targa

In the world of air-cooled sports cars, a rare color scheme can make all the difference between “pass” or “potential project.” Even though the 911 has been white-hot for years now, some cars will still linger on the market longer than others due to some combination of undesirable features. The 911 Targa has always been in this position owing to the hardtop being more sought after, but a Targa in rare OEM colors can change hearts and minds in a jiffy. Find this 911 Targa wearing factory orange paint here on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $30,500.

Orange, green, yellow – these are a few of the more exotic shades of paint that will set a 911 apart from the crowd. This specific paint code is number 156, and while the seller doesn’t specifically say this is original paint, he does indicate that the targa is an “…excellent original car.” The bodywork has some issues and you can see the doors, hood, engine cover, and lower sills have all been sprayed with a rust preventative of some sort. There’s likely more rust in the lower rockers, too, if I had to guess.

The good news is the 911 appears to be mostly complete, even if it has been stripped down in some areas. The missing door panels suggests that the 911 has been caught between some level of static project and restoration candidate for while with no significant momentum in either direction. That looks like a Beverly Hills Car Club sticker in the lower windshield to me, but the 911 now lives in Hollywood, Florida – did the seller buy this 911 as a project from one of the biggest barn find dealers in the country and decide it was too big of a project?

Anything is possible, and while I do love this factory orange paint, even a sought-after color isn’t always enough to justify a costly restoration involving lots of rust repair. If nothing else, many first-time classic buyers may not have the enthusiasm necessary for a project to move it through the costly and time-consuming bodywork phase. This 911 Targa does come with a complete drivetrain and the seller claims no major parts are missing. Would you pay $30K for a project in a desirable color?

Another seller who flunked “Sales 101”. Car’s sitting on a lift but no underside pictures. The ’74s were just like all the 911s before it that had zero factory rust proofing and no treated metal underneath. The 2.7 engines also had the problem of pulling out the head studs and damaging the cases. If case savers have not been installed then an engine teardown is required, assuming the engine doesn’t need a total rebuild along the way. All this for a ridiculous asking price.

Look at all the other cars in the background. Look at the lift. Look at the seller with all those cars and the professional photos yet zero feedback. Consider what you wrote “Another seller who flunked “Sales 101”. Car’s sitting on a lift but no underside pictures.” I don’t this this was an oversite but the master plan.

I certainly can’t speak for the seller, or my knowledge of Porsche’s, but zero feedback does not necessarily mean something is amiss. The seller could be an established shop that never used ebay as a sales process. You have to start somewhere! I would imagine it wouldn’t be hard to track down this shop if someone was interested.

Hmmm….It’s just me but it needs more pieces then it’s worth. Not worth a part car or I’m to high? Or I’m not high enough?

Agree with bobhess, but the 911 market is ablaze with stupid money trading hands. The price here is way too high.

Yes, an extremely desired color and most of the text is on this but even the ebay listing doesn’t say if it’s driveable or can be driven home.
