Dodge The Apocalypse: 1972 Challenger 4×4

For 2017, Dodge introduced an all-wheel-drive Challenger powered by a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 with an EPA mileage rating of 30 mpg. Just try to make a rock crawler out of that! I dare ya!  This 1972 Dodge Challenger was built into the ultimate 4×4 rock crawling machine. Find it here on craigslist in San Francisco, CA for $28,000. (Recently reduced!) Why build a beast of a 4×4 out of a classic Challenger?  At least it wasn’t built from a ‘Cuda!  It sits welded on an M1009 military frame and chassis and is powered by a 5.7l. Since it also has a 4L60E transmission we can assume that this 5.7l is a Chevy 350 and not a Chrysler HEMI.

Check out that articulation!  With a DANA 40 in the front and a DANA 60 in the rear getting power to the pavement or trail should be no problem.  You can see this thing climbing a hill on Youtube.

If you are the lucky buyer of this vehicle that is ready for the upcoming apocalypse, you’ll get to ride it out in comfort with a custom dash, floor mounted shifter for the NP205 transfer case, aftermarket stereo and backup camera.

The seller claims that this drives well enough on pavement that you could take it for a road trip! (He drove it from Las Vegas to the Bay Area.)  I’m sure that it doesn’t get anywhere near 30 mpg like the new Challenger, but you could have far more adventures in this one.  The seller claims $43,000 in receipts to build this 4×4 and is selling it for $28,000 to help fund his father’s medical needs.  Is this a bargain for an apocalypse-ready vehicle?

If I lived where there was more off road areas I would love to have this Challenger monster. I’m sure Mopar guys are having a nightmare but it’s happened to GM & Ford too. This one looks well executed.

That thing looks really top heavy and doesn’t have a roll bar. It’s more of a car show head turner and street wheeler, might make a good trail car, but that’s about it. There is another video on YouTube of it unsuccessfully trying to climb that same obstacle a half dozen times before they are successful.

It shouldn’t be hard to find a better way to spend $28,000.

Appears to be well crafted. Engine looks to be a L98 Chevy with Aluminum heads on it. That one engine picture looks like the upper radiator hose is missing from what I can tell.

Looks to me like this car would have been worth a lot more if it were left stock.

I agree w/ robert gallagher, would be worth more as a faux R/T, i.e. get rid of the 4×4 chassis and install period 426 hemi w/ pistol grip shifted 4 speed, lose the grill in favor of an earlier Challenger version, nobody’d know it was a fake except Galen Glover

This makes me sad. It looks fun and all but you just don’t do that to an American classic muscle car.
