Don’t Be Silly, Buy This 1987 Yugo GV

$500 doesn’t get you that much anymore, certainly not in the car world. Let’s see a show of hands for those of you who have spent $500 or more on a plane ticket or a suit, or hair plugs or botox or whatever. Ok, I don’t expect anyone to fess up about the last two things, but most of us have blown $500 in some incredibly silly ways. This 1987 Yugo GV is just $500 – don’t be silly, buy this Yugo. It can be found here on eBay in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Some of you know the oddball vehicles that I’ve gotten over the years so who am I to talk. I almost bought a really nice, rare Yugo GVX for $4,000 a few months ago – Josh wrote about it here on Barn Finds – and I’m still trying to decide if I’m stupid for almost buying it or for not buying it. It was really, really nice and I could have driven it home so no shipping charges for once. You’ll be hard-pressed to get more attention than when you show up somewhere in this $500 Yugo. And, I’m not talking about the time that you went to the store without pants and you were in aisle 7b with your Hello Kitty boxers on looking at the spices when you remembered. The seller says that this Yugo is in pretty good condition and it runs strong. So strong, in fact, that they took it to a drag strip! Cool.

There are no interior or engine photos but I could check it out in person if anyone had serious thoughts about buying this Yugo and wanted a second set of eyes on it. They do have the front and rear bumpers so no worries there, but the brakes need work so you’ll have to trailer it back to your garage. The transmission shifts great and our friends at AutoZone actually had a new clutch cable in stock (!) so you won’t have to worry about that. Almost 49,000 Yugos were sold in the US in 1987, their biggest year here. Are any of you up for the $500 Yugo Challenge? Come on, what do you have to lose?

You know, these came pretty stripped but did have a rear window defroster. (Gotta’ do something to keep your hands warm in the winter when pushing it.)

This is for sale not too far from me. If I wasn’t knee deep in other projects I’d be up there tonight to buy it.

A Youtuber should buy this and start a video series, ” I bought a Yugo for my daily driver!” Would attract plenty of attention from those wondering how far he will get in it.

My wife forced me to buy a $500 suit, so I retaliated by buying a Yaesu FT-990 ham radio. I’ve worn the suit once but play with the radio most evenings.

I do look good in the suit, but I’ll never let her know…

    From the eBay ad…

“The motor runs very strong and doesn’t make any weird noises.” Not sure if that’s actually a good sign with a Yugo?

rpol35. You can’t sell a vehicle in New York State that does not have a rear defroster since about 1974 or 1975. The original Honda Civics did not come rear defrosters. But then later they were required. Besides, they didn’t generate enough heat to warm your hands. Just enough to not get your hands to freeze to the glass. Pushing on the glass is probably better than pushing on the bumper as I think the glass is stronger.
I was a service manager at a dealership that been a Yugo dealer. So we still had a straggler or 2 that would still come in for service. After about 300 sold from our dealership only 2 lived eight years to still come in for repairs. And I never saw any additional ones running around town. Having driven a few and been responsible for repairs I say NO THNKS!

Think I’d still rather have the hair plugs than this.

No thanks. I would not give $1.00 for a Hugo.

you want to hear probably the most sickest and funniest story about my brother who bought a yugo. first of all i could not believe when he got one to save money since we would take turns driving to n.y.c. for work. first of all my brother wrecked about six cars before this purchase, so could you imagine driving to n.y. in that tin can. then going back to the car one day after work to find out from the police they seen a crack addict steal his jack. then the following week wouldn’t you know we get a flat and have no jack since the cops kept it for evidence. well heres whats the only thing good about that yugo, you don’t need no jack, you just hold it up while your brother changes the tire. scary car to drive in but easy to change a flat.

As of now I am the winning and sole bidder.

Hopefully I win and I can restore this car to its original condition and make use of it as a daily driver in town.

Sorry about your luck. Having sold and worked on them I can attest they were built out of trashed worn out FIAT 128 dies that were scrapped. Russians bought the worn out FIAT 124 molds and came up with the Lada. Enough said.

Wow! What Super Comments!!! Wonder if a Scrap Yard would give 5 bucks for one to Recycle! Let’s see, Uhhh…. what’s the price of Scrap metal today?
As much metal as there is in a Yugo, 5 bucks might be pushing it, but it’s worth a try!!!!!
