Dry Stored Since ’88: 1969 Porsche 912

This 1969 Porsche 912 is described as having under 50,000 original miles and remaining in largely untouched condition. Parked in 1988 in dry storage, it has remained there until the second owner’s passing, and the seller is listing on behalf of the deceased’s daughter. Impressively, vulnerable areas like the floors are claimed to be rot-free and the seller believes the paint to be original, but some items are missing, such as the front bumperettes. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $18,000 and no reserve.

There are some clues that this 912 may have some other modifications to sort out, as I don’t believe the black lettering on the engine lid was how it left the factory. Really, it seems like all the brightwork – such as around the windows – has been blacked out. I’d also wager that the wheels and tires are not quite stock fitment, as the back Fuchs seem slightly staggered to my eyes, but I’m just a guy looking at pictures on the internet. California black plates are nice to see.

The interior looks relatively untouched, and the seller notes that the owner did get around to replacing the carpets. It’s impossible to tell for sure from here, but it looks like a fairly cheap aftermarket kit and not the same high-grade thickness as OEM. I know this because I did exactly this, replacing the factory carpeting with its burly insulation pad with some super thin aftermarket material that bunched up everywhere. Regardless, seats look great and the dash looks to be largely crack-free.

The seller doesn’t allude to how it runs, which I’m assuming to mean it doesn’t at the moment. This is fine – the car’s been in storage for years, after all – and the engine bay doesn’t look particularly unloved. Hopefully, with some basic tune-ups and replacement of the gas tank (if needed), this nicely-aged 912 will fire up again. As per whether the miles are true, the seller does retain a receipt from 1976 indicating just over 7,000 miles at the time, so there’s evidence to support you’re buying a low-mileage garage find.

Jeff… the alloy wheels were an option but the 7″ rears were and are a popular addition. The later SCs with the rear flares were ripe to put 7s on the front and 8s on the rear. The ’80s cars with the black trim influenced lots of folks to black out the trim. You are correct in that the trim did not come black from the factory.

Incorrect dash pad, outside drivers mirror, and all four turn signal lenses. Missing door pockets, lower dash crash pads, and radio. Anodised window surrounds, horn grills, rear deck grill, wiper arms, and lettering incorrectly painted black. Interesting to start since there are no batteries. Actually looks like a decent piece.

Well done, Haig. This needs some money spent on it and then it will be lovely. I have no room.

Engine compartment looks a bit older than 50000 miles . Hard to hide the years of wear in that area. Looks nice.

Very clearly non-original wheels and I’d bet the front and rear bumpers are aftermarket fiberglass RS style. I wonder if it had some boo-boos on the originals? This car would be perfect for me if I had the bucks since originality is not that important to me. It’s the driving that matters.

Good catch on the bumpers and wheels PDX (my favorite airport on the planet). All the stuff is easily reversible if desired. The dash top would require a windshield removal. Not the end of the world.

The ad extols the originality of the car, however it is far from original. Wouldn’t touch it without a thorough inspection, seller is being far from forthright.

@skier. I’m spot on with you on this auction. At first glance it looks like an ok piece. Peel back the layers, not so much. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad deal. Just one I’d want to invest in a Southwest Airline ticket before I plunked down a few Franklins. Eyeballs tell the story. 600 pixels conveniently located? Not so much.

This car is from Petaluma , CA.
It has been in an open air carport for many years … covered with plastic tarps!
Your definition of “dry storage” may differ …
If I recall – the engine was gone through , and it has been painted. The owner never sorted out the engine rebuild and it was parked.
Note the ID plates missing in the drivers door jamb. And the lower door edge discoloration.
Pictures of the door bottoms (interior and exterior) would be nice.
It is a decent “core”… Good luck with the sale.
