eBay Regrets? Pair Of 1969 AMC Javelin SSTs

Among car guy/gal problems, finding out a car you committed to buy was poorly represented by a seller has got to be up there as one of the worst. It sounds like the seller of this pair of 1969 AMC Javelins found out the hard way at least one of the two cars he purchased site-unseen has significant rust issues, and now he’s washing his hands of both projects. Find the Javelins here on eBay with an opening bid of $5,195 for the pair and no activity yet.

The blue car is the better story, as the seller says there’s no rust that he can find. The copper car above is the one that was advertised as being rust-free, but the seller admits when he went to pick it up, he “…found it was rusted just about everywhere.” Oof – that’s a kick in the teeth, and I’m guessing he had already paid for the car because why drag it home? Both cars are 343s that were advertised as numbers-matching.

The interior of the blue SST looks quite nice, with an attractive wood veneer down the center stack and console. Seats aren’t original but that’s not impossible to correct. The seller notes it is a non-A/C car and should come with most parts required to finish it, either stashed in the interior or the trunk. The engine was supposedly rebuilt, but the seller has no proof of this claim from the previous owner.

The copper SST is quite similar, being an automatic non-A/C car. The seller claims it drove onto the trailer but has not run since. The 343 was said to have a mild rebuild by the previous owner, but given they lied about the lack of rust, who knows is anything on this car is as described. A mild rebuild. Yep. That’s all I need to hear.

The blue car looks like it may be viable. Take the Keystone mags and “mildly rebuilt” 343 out of the rust bucket and push the remains off a cliff.

Blue car has a Michigan bicentennial plate on it. That alone ought to be worth $1.80.

There’s just so much more here than meets the eye. Thank goodness.

Kinda a dumb idea to take the 14″ Keystone wheels unless you are planning to make garage art or cool bar stools. It’s hard enough buying some 15″ tires and often more expensive then buying 16″17″18″s now.

I Also the idea of rolling the remains off a cliff. Try locating a complete first gen AMC Javelin parts car in 2019. Too valuable especially if you actually owned one which you do not.

anyone who knows anything about AMC’s knows that there is no such thing as a numbers matching AMC. that should have been a red flag right there.
and that ridiculous wing on the back needs to go into the nearest dumpster.

For the right money these may be viable. At the current ask no. Recently a 1970 390 AMX project car sold for $5000. That was a deal considering it had an AMC nos grill and those people who are selling ask $2000. It cost the same to restore an AMX mechanically as it does a Javelin.

The bittersweet Javelin doesn’t look terrible. A power wash and better pics afterward may revel something different. The blue car with the Michigan plate worries me more. Michigan is in the rust belt.

Under the fenders rockers and pans commonly rust on these cars. You have to look in person. Both cars automatic. Not exciting. Borg Warner trans are not a plus. Upgrading to a torqueflight is the was to go. Planning on changing out the engine crank to make them work however is more work.

Think the present owner is already at that conclusion. Buy one that is sorted and running. It will be less expensive in the long run and you won’t be like the guy posting them now. He has had a lot of work hauling them and the only enjoyment ahead is when a new buyer comes along.
