Engine Swap Candidate: 1969 Porsche 911 Targa

While it looks like it was just rescued from a junkyard, this 1969 Porsche 911T appears to be someone’s stalled project given the amount of spare sheetmetal included in the sale. This is a Targa roof car, making it one of the less desirable configurations, but cheap vintage 911s are hard to come by. While this one is a major project, at least it hasn’t been converted into some hideous restomod with modern bumpers or a poor man’s slant nose conversion. Find it here on eBay with an opening bid of $8,000 and a $9,500 Buy-It-Now.

Yes, you’ll have to find an engine to drop in, but those are reasonably plentiful. The good news is, this 911 is so rough that I wouldn’t be worried about a sympathetic restoration that attempts to get it as close to factory-original as possible. It wears three different shades of paint that I can see, and the aftermarket wheels and later whale-tail spoiler are all tell-tale signs of a life spent with owners with questionable tastes.

I saw what looked like tan paint on the rail in front of where the engine would go, and here you can see what looks like the remnants of Irish Green paint on the door sills. It looks like the floors are non-existent, so I’m assuming some of those replacement panels the seller is including with the sale are replacement floor pans. The dash is beyond rough and there’s no interior to speak of.

As you can see, this Targa needs everything – except maybe replacement glass. I do like the period aftermarket wheels, which appear to be quite wide in the rear and possibly a staggered set. It’s possible even the targa roof panel needs replacement, or maybe the vinyl wrap is just splitting off. Regardless, a closer inspection of the photos reveals rust in multiple places, so the undertaking will be massive, even in light of the spike in vintage 911 prices.

This is worth 8 grand? Really? The stripped out, picked over rusty carcass of someone’s parts car. For at least 8 grand.

Does anyone believe that weeds growing on the floor is a good selling point????

This looks like it was stored below ground. Doubt that there is enough metal left in that chassis to hold much of anything much less an engine. The right rear wheel is worth more than the car.

This was sold for $5000 on Facebook last month so obviously a flipper bought it. I had the opportunity to buy it but just couldn’t justify even at that price. If the engine was there maybe as that in itself is worth 5k. I do like the vintage deep dish bbs style wheels but not worth buying the car for the rims. This car is butchered. It sold before on eBay but apparently the deal fell through at 9k

Junkyard? Crushing any Porsche, regardless on condition is like killing The Golden Goose!
