Estate Sale Find: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is described as an estate sale find that comes with the best of both worlds: drivetrain mods for everyday drivability, and all of the original components included with the sale. It left the factory with a 351 paired to a four-speed manual; today, it has a stroked 408 under the hood with an upgraded 5-speed set-up. You’ll find the Mach 1 here on eBay with bids at $20,200 and the reserve unmet.

The seller has listed the Mustang with a Buy-It-Now of $45,000, so we’re a long way from the likely reserve, it seems. The attitude of the Mach 1 package is on fully display here, with the deep chin spoiler, hood scoop, and rear decklid spoiler combining to give it a seriously aggressive stance. Extensive documentation will accompany the Mustang, including original dealer invoice, window sticker, and Marti report. Paint looks sharp, and a dent is noted in the roof.

This car spoke to me, personally, as I used to see an identical example, right down to the color, languishing in a driveway near Leominster, Massachusetts. That car actually ended up on a Hemmings “Abandoned Cars” calendar, and later disappeared. This example looks quite tidy inside with clean bucket seats, original steering wheel, full center console, and obviously, the upgraded 5-speed manual transmission. The dash looks uncracked as well.

While the engine swap may disappoint purists, the good news is all of the original components are still with the car. These include the matching engine, transmission, air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, and heads, and the seller notes the A/C components remain installed but not hooked up. With great provenance and all the right equipment, this Mach 1 is sure to draw a crowd – and the next owner will have the option to return it stock condition if desired. The best of both worlds!

    Not a bad combo, especially with A/C the original engine/tranny both included. But that engine compartment is very untidy and pic 24 shows somewhat insignificant damage to one side of the roof. Will be interesting to see final $.

    Arthell64 the transmission has been upgraded to a five speed and the motor has been stroked from a 351 to a 408!! I like the upgrades!! Even know it doesn’t match the vin!!! It should be quicker and having that extra gear on the highway would be good!!!

    Nice way to go for a driver, so long as that 408 runs good on unleaded pump gas. Mach 1’s are sharp.

    The buy it now is way too high based on the obvious condition issues. I’m sure the car runs strong but for 45k I’m not going to fix a damaged B pillar which equates to a complete repaint or freshen up the interior. The current bid ($23k) is not far off from what I see in max value ($25-27k).

    The asking price pushes it against a barely 2018 GT350. Based on performance, there is no comparison. Based on the response at a gas station, there is no comparison. People are drawn to the GT’s in a parking lot. The Mach is nice, but the GT350 is a monster. Unbelievable how much car you get for $45k. There are only so many Mustang buyers out there and I think this one is mispriced even as nice as it is. Bring out a paintless dent repair expert and the sail panel/roof could look 90% better. Those guys can do wonders.

    Mach 1’s are very attractive and desirable cars. This one isn’t bad but there are better examples out there for similar prices. Roof repair, engine detailing needed. The powertrain swap is fine with some people but would be a deal-killer for others.

    Jay E.’s point is interesting. The new performance Mustangs (even the base GT) are killer cars. If someone has $45K to spend, I wonder how many actually cross-shop a 1969 Mach 1 with a 2020 GT? They by and large serve different roles. Perhaps, for many of us, what we want is “one of each.”

    I’m sure the new Mustangs are incredible to drive, but styling wise, I think the Challenger comes closer to the original than the Mustang does. I think the ’69 is the pinnacle fastback design. Just my humble opinion.

    On a quiet spring night you can hear a 1969 Ford Mustang oxidize & rust out.
    If you look at a Mustang for a 12 month period you can actually see them rust over time. I’m not surprised to see this Stang existing in a dry garage over time but as soon as it sees rain or moisture it will rust like all the other Ford Mustangs that got crushed at the wrecker.

    45K ? – Only if all the problems are fixed. With just 2 days and 20 hours left, I predict NO SALE! I agree with JAYE, any 2016 to 2019 GT would be a better use of MUSTANG $$$, a much better bang for your bucks.

    That dude is on crack. I have an all original 1969 Mach 1 with factory shaker, AC, PDB, PS, and 4bbl with an FMX transmission. Mine doesn’t have near the issues this one has and I wouldn’t say that car is worth more than 30K if that. If someone buys the car for their asking price, they are not shopping around. As for classic vs new Mustang, why not both? I have both a GT350 and a 1969 Mach 1. All Mustangs are cool cars to own whether new or old.

    Mr. Mustang you are selling your self short, I also have have an original 69 Mach 1 with a shaker hood and they are worth north of 50 grand. Back to this car, way over priced.
