Reader Ride: 1936 Ford Tudor Sedan Slantback

Updated 2/7/18 – Steve has dropped his asking price to $7,900 and listed it here on eBay.

From 11/30/17 From Steve A: This is a rare Model 68 slantback, as most ’36 Fords found today are humpback. This Ford has been in the family since the mid 1940’s and was stored in California for years with the plan to restore it back to its original splendor, but the opportunity for restoration never came around.

As you can see, the body is really solid on this car, and there’s a great reason for that! Steve continues: The body is in good shape with minimal rust thanks to being stored in California for so many years. You can see the California black plates in some of the photos.

I personally think the rear “slant back” styling is a lot prettier than the “hump back” or trunk style. I love that tire cover, too.

Needless to say, after this amount of time there isn’t a whole lot of interior left. However, I do see a lot of floor present, which reflects the California life of the car.

More from Steve:  I am not aware of any missing parts and the engine was changed over to a 1940 Mercury flathead V8 and brakes were changed to I believe 1940 as well. Original bumpers are included and wrapped up for protection.  It’s pretty obvious that the engine will need some refurbishment, but at least you can get pretty much anything for a FoMoCo flathead V8.

This 1936 is currently stored in a shop in Dell Rapids, South Dakota and looking for a new home. The 2 attachments reference the Serial # of 18-2294438 and the title of H14769. It has not been driven since sometime in the 1960’s. Steve is looking for $15,000 for this unusual Ford. I’m really hoping someone decides to put it back on the road and keep it as original appearing as possible. Are you the one to bring this flat back back? If it’s you, be sure to message Steve via the form below. And if you have a classic that needs a new home, please consider listing it here on Barn Finds!

I’ve always been partial to the flat back sedans. I had a ’38 Std. 2-door and would probably still have it if it hadn’t been ripped off one night. Still bothers me when I think about it….

The price should read $3500 for the cheapest model that needs Everything and wouldn’t bring the suggested price restored

Here’s my 1935 slant back circa 1984~5. The last time I knew of it, it was in Mississippi I think. Give me a shout if you’ve seen it.

My dad bought his ’36 slant-back from a carpenter he knew in 1955 or thereabouts. The guy had used it as his work truck and had kept the back seats covered up somewhere, so they were in perfect shape. Dad was a sign painter and didn’t need too much storage space, and it was our family car besides, so the seats went back in. We kids had never had as much legroom – as the oldest and tallest, I was the only one for whom the front seats were in kicking distance! The car was in good condition, too, and worth every penny of the $25 Dad had paid for it. Well, that was a bargain even then, since any old Ford that ran was at least a $50 car, $75 or $100 for a really good one. As I recall he “upgraded” to a 1946 a couple of years later, which really annoyed me, since it was a lot harder to see out of and not as easy to drive, which I was just starting to do.

As a past owner of several ’36 Fords, (my favorite model), I clutch my heart & fall to my knees over this price. As a past owner of 356 Porches, I do the same for current prices of these too. This has become a different planet than the one I used to live on.

I’m surprised there weren’t more comments about the rust issues on this car. Outside of body looks good, inside appears all eaten up. This is just a shell and not a good shell either.

Why does this jalopy keep popping up? Every week? Can someone please buy the other headlight and install it at least?

Reminds me a lot of the 36 Dodge slantback I bought in late 2016. I much prefer the slantback styling over the touring model but it’s clear why the touring model was so much more practical/popular. This Ford has a LOT of issues but at least the asking price has dropped to a more reasonable number.

I don’t know if I would call it rare. They made 174,770 slope backs in 1936. Now how many are still around I don’t know. But this one is missing some parts. Headlights(wrong), engine prone to cracks(rusted cyl), body need hammer and dolly work. all the weatherstripping and so on. Yes complete restoration. Great car to start with, but not a money maker when done. You must want to keep this for that money. I have 3, and 2 I bought for less and were in better condition. I would consider this one if the price was right. I love the 36 look. I wish the best of luck in selling it.
