EXCLUSIVE: 1955 Packard Clipper Custom

Reader Thomas C’s Packard is one beautiful driver that’s ready to be enjoyed and shown off! It sure is an elegant classic and is loaded with creature comforts, including working AC. Thomas has enjoyed it for the past few years, but time has come to find a new home for it. So, if you’d love to hit the road in this Clipper, be sure to take a closer look and contact Thomas via the form below with your best offer!

What Makes It Special? This Packard Clipper is a very nice driver that is also ready for car shows and it attracts attention where ever it goes.

Body Condition: Very clean western car that repainted in the past with nice upholstery.

Mechanical Condition: Runs and drives super. With add on working AC, power steering, and brakes. It’s equipped with the 352 4bbl carb and Delco Remy ignition. In fact, the electrical system is Delco Remy. I’ve driven it 2,000 miles in the last 2 years with no problems. Complete brake system overhaul. Extra parts all go with the car. Includes spare transmission, a Twinultramatic. You can drive it home today.

When Packard merged with Studebaker in 1954, the Clipper Custom was updated with new looks, 12-volt electronics, a V8 engine, and torsion-bar suspension, which greatly improved the ride. The next year, the car was updated again, essentially making this a one year only car! It’s really an interesting bit of American motor history and this one is a beautiful example. If you have any questions about it, please leave them in the comments or contact Thomas directly via the form below.

The “to [sic] many doors” crowd can just click on past. What a beautiful ride, then and now.

The dash board in this car is phenomenal!!! One of the coolest I’ve seen in quite some time!! The car would be great for a Sunday cruise with the family!! It’s nice to see such an old classic American car so well kept!!! I would be proud to show up at the local car show with a car like this!!! Great car!!!

Thanks for the memory! Haven’t seen one since I was a kid. These were great
cars that were soundly built. Like Coventry Cat, I’d gladly float down the road in this car. From what I’ve read, that
Torsion bar suspension must’ve been really something special. Not only did
these cars ride well, but they handled well
too. Had a ’50 Packard limo and loved it.
Sadly, these were the last real Packards.
Two years later, the brand was gone for good when the Packardbakers came out in ’57. Thomas, you have a beautiful Packard there. Nicest one I’ve seen in
years. Good luck with the sale, just wish I
    was the buyer.

Sharp observers will notice, I don’t believe it says “Packard” anywhere on the outside. I read, James Nance, then president of Studebaker-Packard, wanted to distance the ’55 Clipper as far from Packard as it could, and in ’56, I believe, the Clipper became a separate make. Also, in late ’55, dealers made the factory issue small Packard badges for the trunk, that this one doesn’t have. Problems with assembly, and I believe a strike, caused lengthy delays, and many customers cancelled their orders. The smart ones waited, as I feel, the ’55 Clipper was one of the nicest cars offered. Beautiful car, here, and special piece of history.

Beautiful car. The price seems very reasonable for the great condition of the car.

Packard actually came out with a/c back in the 40’s but I believe it used ammonia rather than Freon.

Pretty car. Vintage A/c puts it over the top, and I love the hat on the seat. Some may remember the big law suit between General Motors vs Chrysler over the use of torsion bar suspension. Strange how Packard had it before Chrysler.
    God bless America
