EXCLUSIVE: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Custom

Reader Mark G built this Malibu into one heck of a machine! The body and paint are beautiful, the interior has been redone, and under the hood is a beast of a 427 V8. We will go over what all has been done in detail below. If you already know that you have to have this Chevelle, you can contact Mark via the form at the bottom of this article! You can find it in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin with a $42,000 asking price.

As beautiful as this Chevelle is, it’s what’s under the hood that’s the real showpiece. The 4-bolt 427 V8 has been built out for some serious performance. It has received a steel crank, roller cam, big heads, and a 12 to 1 compression ratio. Getting all that power to the ground is a Keisler TKO 5-speed, a 12-bolt rear end with a 3.73 gear. Stopping is handled by disc brakes upfront. While he had it apart, he installed new brake lines, gas tank, fuel lines, and all the consumables.

The interior is pretty much all-new, with new carpet, door panels, upholstery, and gauges. Personally, I’d prefer the original gauge cluster, but the new gauges will keep you better apprised to what’s happening with that big 427! It sure is a clean car and would be fun to drive.

This Chevelle is a great cruiser and Mark says it cruises down the highway nicely and that you can do 70 miles per hour in 5th gear with the engine turning just 2,200 rpm. With all the work that’s been done, it’s more or less a new car and is ready to be driven. So, what do you think of this custom Chevrolet?

I didn’t expect to see a front bench seat…very cool! Seems like a great buy, too. The new owner will certainly enjoy it!

looks great I like the dash treatment… i would have given the panel under the trunk lid the SS treatment, but just my preference

Lose the bench and get something more supportive. Other than that its an awesome ride.

Beautiful Build. I’m sure the owner has a good part of that 42 large invested. Not sure the bench seat would stand the g’s if you stood on it!! Love the blue also. Good luck to the new owner!!

It would be better if it had the 4 speed manual transmission instead of the 5 speed. I would have to get rid of all the chrome that is under the hood it don’t help it go faster. Chrome collects the heat and makes everything hotter under the hood which takes away from the horsepower. Painted stuff runs cooler and produces more horsepower than chrome does.

Hats off to Mark for building a sweet 427 Chevelle! Spot on with the color and the wheels, the best bore and stroke as far as I’m concerned when it comes to big block Chevy’s, bench seat is kinda retro but could be improved upon….not that it matters.
I’m just not a chrome guy when it comes to engine compartments but I will not scrutinize here. One blast thru the gears would make me forget all about the blinding chrome. I like the new gauges and they make perfect sense in a built street machine like this.
One for all the gear heads out there!

This is a true craftsmanship work of art!! If I had the cash laying around it would be mine!! We all here have seen basket cases selling for half this and shells with no motor or transmission for anywhere between $10-$25K this is a steal of a deal when you see it that way!!! I’m truely jealous someone else will get this car!!

Most of the shiny stuff under the hood isn’t chrome, it’s polished aluminum. Aluminum dissipates heat very well. I’d be more concerned about the time needed to keep it clean and polished than retaining heat. I’d also be worried about how “fun” it would be to drive with the 12:1 compression ratio. I hope the buyer has access to a steady supply of race fuel. Still, a beautiful and expensive build for sure!

Not exactly a “barn find”. More like a restoration of a barn find.
